Heard this discussion on FOX Sports and thought it would have interest here.

Create two Mt. Rushmore's for the Cowboys: One reflecting overall team history, the other from 1985 until now.

Your Mt. Rushmore can include owners, GMs, coaches, assistant coaches and position coaches.

Dallas Cowboys:

Overall history: Tom Landry, Roger Staubach, Emmitt Smith, Bob Lilly

1985-now: Jimmy Johnson, Michael Irvin, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith

This will undoubtedly be an unpopular opinion, but I don't know if I'd put Jimmy on the "Mt. Rushmore" for dallas, even if it was 85-now. He only spent 5 seasons here and yes he won 2 SBs, but it was only 5 seasons. Add to that he coached in Miami for atleast 4 seasons.

Maybe Hershall Walker should be the 4th, but with a big frown on his face instead.

History: Tom Landry, Roger Staubach, Randy White, Bob Lilly

1985-now: Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, Jerry Jones

Tom, Tex, Brandt and Murchinson

Tom HC, Tex GM, Gil Brandt VP of player personnel and owner Clint Murchison.

They are the creators of the Dallas Cowboys

Tom landry, Tex Schramm, Bob Lilly, Randy White

Tex Schramm over Staubach???? In my opinion hard decision one i would not want to make if we were building a real cowboys mt rushmore

I agree with you. I think people put Jimmy on that level based on the assumption that had he stayed he would have kept winning Super Bowls and the team never would have experienced a downturn, and that's simply not a fair and reasonable assumption. Jimmy did a great job for a very short time period, but he never was faced with having to maintain it over a long stretch.

1960-Present

Tom Landry, Bob Lilly, Roger Staubach, Emmitt Smith

1985-Present

Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Jerry Jones

Bob Lilly- 1st Cowboy

Tom Landry- 1st Coach

Roger Starbuch- Best qb

Michael Irvin- I chose him over emmitt only because emmitt played for the Arizona Cardinals

All Time History - Tex Schramm, Tom Landry, Roger Staubach, Bob Lilly

85 to Current - Jerry Jones, Jimmy Johnson, Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith.

It's true that Jimmy was only here for 5 years but he shaped the club, and really the NFL in a lot of ways, for a decade and more. Even though he's not a part of the Cowboys, he still represents the Cowboys on a weekly basis on Television. He's a big, big part of the Cowboys Organization, from "How Bout Them Cowboys?!" to his Super Bowl Championship teams. If he ever goes into the Hall, I fully suspect that it will be a sea of White and Blue and Silver there and not Aqua, White and Orange. He's a Cowboy in my mind.

On a side note, I suspect that we might see Stephen and Red mentioned in this discussion at some point as well.

I agree that Jimmy was huge in shaping the team post-Landry, and he was an important figure in the team's history. Nevertheless, the "Mt. Rushmore" tag to me implies someone who the organization leaned on for a long time through thick and thin. I don't mean that to sound like a criticism of Jimmy because I don't put all the blame on him for leaving, and in fact put more on Jerry than Jimmy, but regardless of blame the fact is he never had to face the challenge of being a rock for the team for many years.

So no players then?

One guy that nobody has mentioned is Clint Murchinson. He was the guy that created everythign, and the guy that gave Landry and Schramm the job security and stability and silent support to build a the organization. He is the reason the franchise started on such solid footing because without him there is no team to begin with, and there is no Landry/Schramm etc. Clint probably wouldn't want his face on the side of a mountain though - he never minded staying in the background.

I think he defined the Cowboys swagger and was the architect of those Super Bowl teams (even the last one he didn't coach). I'm giving him credit for rebuilding a woeful franchise and giving it a football personality, something we're still searching for after all these years.

I think I would place Irvin over Troy because he was the heart and soul of the Dallas Cowboys

I agree. Don't forget "We will win. And you can print that in three-inch headlines."

I believe Jimmy Johnson belongs in the Hall of Fame. The question asked, "Can you write the history of NFL and not mention this person" applies to Jimmy Johnson.
