Cowboys Nation Mock 4.0: Pick One of Four

I've posted mock drafts each Friday the past few weeks and want to keep things going, but I'm going to offer a twist.

Last year, the Cowboys, sitting in the 27th slot, entered the first round with a short list, which included Texas FS Earl Thomas, Idaho G Mike Iupati and Oklahoma State WR Dez Bryant. Thomas was gone at pick 14, and Iuputi at pick 17, so Dallas made a small trade up to 24 to nab the last short-lister.

Based on what we've seen in mocks and looking over prospects, what's your first round short list? Mine is four deep -- Cal DE Cam Jordan, USC OT Tyron Smith, Wisconsin OT Gabe Carimi and Mississippi State OT Derek Sherrod. I think Dallas needs to get one of these players with its first pick....

TRADE UP OR STAY PUT:
LSU DB Patrick Peterson
Cal DE Cam Jordan
Clem DE Da'Quan Bowers (like Peterson if he gets past 5 you have to be ready to try and make a move)

TRADE DOWN:
USC OT Tyron Smith
Miami CB Brandon Harris

TRADE WAY DOWN:

Wisc OT Gabe Carimi
Florida OG Mike Pouncey

GUILTY PLEASURE:
Alabama RB Mark Ingram

I wonder how the Cowboys view these OTs. Teams will rate them differently.

I sure wouldn't leave round 1 without Smith or Sherrod. The Lions will probably take an OT at 13 in a deep CB class, in order to keep Stafford upright. The Gaints and Eagles have needs there. The Colts need one.

Here is my view:

1. Tyron Smith
2. Derek Sherrod
3. Nate Solder (upside)
4. Gabe Carimi (safer pick than Solder but upside is not there/ RT only?)
5. Anthony Costonzo (probably rated higher by some teams)

I still think Dallas would rate Dareus higher than Jordan and would take him due to his power, strength, disruption ability, and his versatility along the defensive line. He has the low powerful build of a NT and is built to 2 gap.

I'd choose from these players:

Tyron Smith
Derek Sherrod
Marcell Dareus
Cameron Jordan

Obviously, I'd take the OT to give my quarterback and skill guys every chance to succeed. Garrett is an offensive coach, and this offensive line is not going to cut it. If you don't get an OT in the first 20 picks, you most likely will not get the one you want. You are taking a big risk in moving down to pick form a lack luster safety class (the extra second) Furthermore, you will probably watch New York and Philadelphia draft two of them. If I take one at 9 and if the Lions take one, the Giants and Eagles will not get the highest rated players.

Trade Up: Fairley or Peterson (small trade up of 2-3 spots)
Stay Put: Quinn, Miller, or Jordan
Trade Down: Sherrod or Carimi

Trade up: Absolutely Not

Stay put: Rather Not

Trade down:Carimi/Sherrod

The top players in this draft are Von Miller, Patrick Peterson and Nick Fairley. If one of them is not there at 9 then I would trade down

Any 3-4 team should.

Peterson (won't fall)
Fairley (won't fall)
Dareus

Dareus is built more like a 3-4 NT than he is a DE.

In a year or 2 he'll be 320-325 no problem and still plenty quick and athletic.

Him and Brent at NT is a thought with Rat at DE.

Prince is also an option at 9.

Exactly! Dareus is good to go at any spot on the DL. Or keep Rat at NT and let Dareus play LDE.

Could you imagine this?

RDE: Richard Seymour (have to get him in FA)
NT: Marcell Dareus (has to fall to #9 in the draft and be selected by us)
LDE: Jay Ratliff

Imposing and disruptive. Would be the best DL in the league with Bowen backing up both DE spots.

If Rat or Dareus get injured either or can play the nose or Left End and Bowen can take over the open end spot.

This means we can get away with 5 d-lineman believe it or not and use the extra spot for LB and/or Secondary which is important because Rob Ryan needs extra LB's and secondary players for his variety of schemes.

Prince got blown up against Blackmon from OSU when they played against each other. I would pass on him but he is definitely someone who could be there at # 9.
