1st Round -- Tyron Smith, OT, USC
We're all still speculating, waiting for his pro day March 30th. In the meantime, word emerges that teams in the 9-13 range are looking at OTs. What's more, I've seen Cameron Jordan in some big mocks as high as 8 to Tennessee and I got word this week that another team higher that Dallas has some interest in the Cal DE.
What do you do if three of your top DE candidates - Fairley, Dareus and Jordan -- are gone by pick 9? Do you push J.J. Watt there? Do you risk dealing down and losing him? I go OT. At nine Dallas should have its pick of the tackle crop. If Smith shows the speed and the footwork that's been forecast, dealing down more than five spots may risk losing him and Watt. That's too cute for my blood. I love J.J. Watt, but in the 9 slot, I like Smith better. There's always the option of landing a Gabe Carimi or an Anthony Castonzo after dealing down, but Smith's upside seems so much higher.
2nd Round -- Kendrick Ellis, DT, Hampton
I spent a couple of days in the press boxes at the NFLPA Bowl in San Antonio in early February, staying out of the freezing cold that swept Texas that week. I got to peer at the notes of scouts from at least ten NFL teams. On every single set the name ELLIS was bolded, underlined or highlighted.
