The Dallas Cowboys may not have made the big splash that fans were hoping for during free agency. Actually, some of the signings could be considered like finding a diamond in the rough.

It was apparent that the team wanted to add depth to their push rush, as they brought in three defensive ends this offseason.

One of those names is Payton Turner. Turner spent the first four seasons of his career with the New Orleans Saints, and now is looking for a fresh start with the Cowboys.

Buy those tickets and jerseys! Keep buying in. It’s only been 30 years and yet some still gobble it up. I wonder what flavor the koolaid is this off-season?

I think calling him a pass rusher builds him up into something he's not. He's a base end who will play the run well. He may be able to get some pressure on early downs or inside as a DT on clear passing downs, but he's not a pass rusher.

Turner was brought in because we weren't going to bring back Lawrence or Golston, who were our base ends. Lawrence was a better pass rusher, but has been going downhill in that area, which may have been speeded up by last year's injury.

We're essentially replacing what Lawrence and Golston gave us with Turner, Fowler and Kneeland. Williams also gets a chance to step in as a pass rusher since that isn't a strength of Turner or Kneeland (at least not yet).

Rooting for him to be good. We need some of these guys who everyone insists aren't good to actually be good.

I'm not saying he'll be great or that any of these guys will be. But I like the upside of some and competition is always a good thing in football.
A lot of it is not understanding what their roles are going to be. Turner providing anything as a pass rusher would be a bonus. We got him to be part of the rotation as a base end and help us against the run.

Fowler isn't here for the opposite reason. We know he can rush the passer but isn't that good against the run, so he's going to be nickel rusher.

Similarly, I think we traded for Elam at corner because we plan to use a lot of Cover 3. Cover 3 calls for corners that can play press and cover the sideline. Elam showed that he's not good in a scheme that doesn't allow him to press. He still has a zone to cover and gives him too many responsibilities, but the responsibilities of Cover 3 better fit his skillset than other zone schemes.

Turner is the Gholston replacement. I think he could be a solid edge setter. Anything else is gravy.

I am curious how Eberflus will deploy his ends on run downs. I would think that we view Kneeland and Turner as the run-down ends. That would mean that we would use Parsons as a run-down linebacker because we're not going to leave our best defender off the field (although we should rest him some on first downs, so he's fresh to get after the passer).

Eberflus doesn't like to blitz, though (his 23.5 percent blitz rate last year was the highest of his career), so does he play Parsons like a linebacker or does he have him attack the line of scrimmage even when he's at LB and drop a lineman to still only attack with four?

Frankly, considering we'll be in nickel about 70 percent of the time or more, the answer to that question may not matter that much since we do need to rest him and run downs are the best time for that for our disruptive pass rusher.

From what I hear Eberflus on 3rd down likes to have 4 down linemen rush and have 7 guys defending the pass. I don’t see Parsons playing linebacker at all next season. He might move inside on passing downs for mismatches but that is it. Baring injuries we have a potential solid 5 man end rotation. Kneeland, Williams, and Turner have to step up.
