Cowboys' newly signed pass rusher shows off commitment during offseason workout

He’s only played in 31 games in four seasons.
So 5 sacks in 31 games. Doesn't exactly jump up and scream "pass rusher"! If he had been a highly productive pass rusher in college I might feel a little different, but he wasn't. Who knows, maybe he can be, but for now is there enough evidence to really call him a pass rusher?

I’m not arguing he’s a pass rusher. I’m putting his games played in proper context. 31 games is vastly different than 64 games (i.e., 4 years).

He wasn’t drafted as a refined Day 1 pass rusher. He’s was a traits prospect: 6’-5”, 270 lbs, with 35” arms and 10.25” hands (check his testing metrics) and likely a RE that can flip inside. He left Houston aa a developing prospect (9 sacks in final two seasons/17 total games).

Think David Irving.

Cowboys fans have to be feeling optimistic after newly signed pass rusher is shown putting in the work this offseason.

The Dallas Cowboys may not have made the big splash that fans were hoping for during free agency. Actually, some of the signings could be considered like finding a diamond in the rough.

It was apparent that the team wanted to add depth to their push rush, as they brought in three defensive ends this offseason.

One of those names is Payton Turner. Turner spent the first four seasons of his career with the New Orleans Saints, and now is looking for a fresh start with the Cowboys.

I would sign with the Cowboys too since there is hardly any competition on the
D-Line. It's almost like getting free money from Jerry Jones to miss a few tackles and put a few SWIM moves on the ALL PRO Offensive line..........LOL! I saw Jerry Jones down by the pool the other day and his back was badly bruised, when I asked him what happen and who was responsible for this beating, his response was he was! Apparently, he pats himself on the back every time he makes what he calls a GREAT DEAL................LOL!

I'm all for this I mean come on we saw a Fowler get his career back on track not that it was completely flat but he was a former first rounder I believe that was kind of moving around a little bit and bam he's doing good work now and making good money.. But when you look at it from this angle we do have Sam Williams coming back and he will be ready for game one unless he has a setback he missed all of last year and he's gripping we have Fowler and we have Neeland and we have Parsons as much as we could use a young outside linebacker pass rusher this guy could fit right into this mix and at the very least he'll come along like Armstrong did who ended up going and starting with Washington.

Turner is the Gholston replacement. I think he could be a solid edge setter. Anything else is gravy.
Not really maybe the next version of Armstrong coming along slow but if you're looking for an actual direct replacement cause Goldstein was more inside than he was outside but could play both i'm going to have to go with Solomon Thomas but yes,

we've got them on the team... I believe that guy named Wheat can also play inside and out a little bit depending on how the alignments are and situational football but I'm comparing this guy more to Armstrong he might be a late bloomer and could get it on track but not depending on him when you already have Fowler and Parsons starting and then you have KNeeland and Sam Williams backing them up along with again these other guys sprinkled in...

Gholston really came on in the end. Sadly he will get buried if the Giants draft Carter.

Buy those tickets and jerseys! Keep buying in. It’s only been 30 years and yet some still gobble it up. I wonder what flavor the koolaid is this off-season?
I knew we couldnt go one page of responses before the debbie downer showed their face. You keep talking about OTHERS gobbling it up, yet where will you be come every game? Right in front of your Tv watching... just like all the "Gobblers."

Can we really call him a "pass rusher"? He only had 10 total sacks in 4 years of college and 5 total sacks in 4 years in the NFL

I know sacks don't tell all, but only 15 sacks in 8 years?
First of all, combining his college and his prose doesn't count you got to stick with one recently would be the NFL it doesn't mean he can't come along as a late bloomer and offer something as the 5th option in... You do realize that he only played 18 games his first three seasons I don't know why he might have been injured but last year was his first 16 games which was almost a season and yet he only had two sacks but doesn't mean his career is hit a dead end it means it's got a slow start so we just can watch him see what happens good thing the pressure is off now he's no longer a first round pick he's no longer going to be a main option and sometimes just getting to a new place and having the pressure taken off he can help your career a lot..

Not sad that's what happens when you leave for the money I realized we didn't really offer him anything he came on but let's not act like we didn't lose anything but maybe a 3rd option here for now I mean we'll see if the guys career takes off but if he gets buried that means he's not doing something right and for the most part I'm hearing giant fans thinking it will be really dumb after all what they invested in pass rush to pick a pass rusher in the top five in my opinion I hope they pass on him and somehow he ends up at twelve and we pick Abdul Carter.....

I just think there was good chemistry between Parsons, Osa, and Gholston. They came in together and ended the season on a role. The team finished 3rd in sacks.

He's a nice player but here's a little info so together tank who didn't play all season he got hurt and Goldstein subbed in for him I think they had eight sacks together might be eight point five.

Fowler had 10.5 by himself and we just brought him over so maybe he'll more than make up for a little shift and then you add in Sam Williams kneeling in his second year I mean I mean I get it but I think you're overrating him just a little bit but yes it was a nice year for him and he got paid and paid too much to keep him that's what happens... Because maybe he goes over there and he's not as good maybe he doesn't get the same stats.

I only looked at college stats was to see if there was a history as an effective pass rusher that might provide hope he has only being held back by circumstances in the NFL. I think that's perfectly reasonable.

I know he has had some injury problems & he hasn't had a full opportunity to prove himself, but that's all the more reason it made sense to look at college production to see if there is something in his history to suggest he is a quality pass rusher that has only been held back by injury at the NFL level.

Regardless, my point is reasonable that it's a little questionable to label him a pass rusher unless/until he shows it's an appropriate label. Maybe he will eventually prove it is, and I hope he does, but at this point it's just assumption without much evidence

Well two each their own ,that might be true for you,

but for me I want to ask this question more than that why did the Saints take this guy in the first round then?

I don't know where he went but he obviously went in the 1st round(28th overall) of the Saints in 2021..

So you're worried about the Cavaliers picking him up as a cheap bargain bin free agent when the Saints are the ones that actually drafted him in the first round because they saw his potential I don't know what that potential was but they thought they can nurture his skills but they've had a lot of coaching changes over there so I don't know maybe he got buried and now he can resurrect this career with no pressure...

It is strange though I just looked it up Gregory Rousseau went the very next guy to Buffalo and he has like 25 sacks in his career it's kind of like us taking Taco and then TJ Watt going next to Pittsburgh but you got to wonder why it must be to Jerry Jones not the only one to do this because the New Orleans Saints took this guy and not somebody I remember his name in the draft had a little bit of recognition as far as he could be a good pass rusher in this league..

His short shuttle was faster than Parsons.

He got 5 shocks in 5 games played senior year. On IR 2 years with Saints.

My memory from long ago, at a certain point the team picks players for a special trait. Many or all of these free agent signees have special gifts that we get to look for the price of an airline ticket to DFW.

These look like Charlie Munger investments.

The Saints might have made a mistake - it happens. You mentioned Taco, and doesn't he prove that? lol Or they might have thought of him as more of a run stopper than a pass rusher, or thought he had enough athleticism they could coach him up. I don't know what their thinking was.

As for being worried about the Cavaliers (I assume this was an autocorrect and you meant Cowboys) picking him up cheap, you're reading stuff in my words that isn't there. I don't have a problem taking a look at a guy at a reasonable price. And I'm not even saying he can't develop into a decent player. All I've said is labels have to be earned and not merely assumed.

LOL Yeah I don't know where that came from,

but yes our front office I mean they're just looking at the guy and it's possible that our new coaching staff on the defense see this guy is a good rotational guy that they can actually work with maybe he needs a change of venues yes mistakes are made all the time I'm just saying the guy went in the first round for some crazy reason I mean it's not like this was a 4th round pick the Cowboys are trying to revamp his career this is a first rounder...

But I'm not worried about him because he's about 5th right now would be for rotation to create pass rush...
