Podcast: Scott Linehan wants Kellen Moore to be Cowboys #2 QB - Todd Archer, ESPN
In this podcast, Todd Archer chats with Ian Fitzsimmons in part about the Cowboys' backup situation. Here's a partial transcript of that discussion.

Fitzsimmons: As Peyton Manning said at the Super Bowl, "without Brock Osweiler, the Broncos are not in the Super Bowl." So what do the Cowboys do with the backup QB position when they have a very fragile Tony Romo as the starting QB?

Archer: […] I don’t know if the Cowboys are going to be going QB at No. 4. I look at the free agent market and I don’t see anybody where you would say, "Oh, that guy would be as good as Orton was when Kyle Orton was here, or as when they got Jon Kitna from Detroit. "

Maybe Colt McCoy would be in the mix for some people, maybe a Chase Daniel. But the more I hear Scott Linehan talk, the more he wants Kellen Moore to be this team’s No. 2.

Fitzsimmons: WHAAAT???

Archer: We talk about "pull" in the NFL. We’ll see how much pull Linehan is going to have if Kellen Moore is going to be this team’s No. 2 and the Cowboys draft a QB, if not at No.4 then in the top three rounds.

Question: Manziel and RG III most often mentioned in connection with Cowboys, but is there another free agent QB available that would be a better choice to back up Romo?

Jon Machota: I don't know if they would be a better choice but Ryan Fitzpatrick and Colt McCoy interest me. However, I think Fitzpatrick will re-sign with the Jets because he has a better shot at starting there. When you look at the list of unrestricted free agent QBs, there aren't many I can say are definitely/without a doubt a better option than Kellen Moore.

Let me answer the second part first: Rolando McClain is more likely to re-sign than Morris Claiborne, but that's just a guess. I don't think anything is locked in stone, so don't get carried away. But the main question is at quarterback. The more I hear Scott Linehan talk about Kellen Moore, the more I think he will not press the issue for a veteran backup. That would steer the Cowboys into a must-have in the draft for a quarterback. As for the veterans that will be available, remember, opportunity will matter to them. Tony Romo is the starter without question. So now you're talking about guys such as Case Keenum, Drew Stanton, Colt McCoy, Chase Daniel and Matt Moore. I'm on record saying McCoy would be an interesting option. His agent is David Dunn, who also represents Linehan and Jason Garrett.

Last offseason, before the Washington Commanders named Kirk Cousins their starting quarterback, 35 NFL coaches and personnel evaluators graded projected starters for our annual Quarterback Tier Rankings survey. Robert Griffin III ranked fifth from the bottom at No. 28. Josh McCown, Brian Hoyer, Matt Cassel and Geno Smith were the only projected starters listed below him.

Could the reality be as bad as the perception for a player who dazzled the NFL as a rookie during the 2012 season? The market will answer that question after the Commanders inevitably release Griffin in the coming weeks.

Griffin could benefit from a change of scenery, but many within the league believe that a new mindset is what he has needed the most. A personnel director said last offseason he thought Griffin was starting to show positive signs on that front.

"We have seen a little more humility out of him, and hopefully that translates to his preparation and his play," this director said. "He has to rethink and reframe how he plays."

Putting together a short list of "fits" for Griffin must account for the reality that NFL teams think Griffin has more name than game at this point. As the price for Griffin drops, upside can begin to outweigh risks.

I would like him as well..

He can make plays.

Carson Wentz is the guy though. That's who we need.

Absolutely! I'm advocating signing McCoy for the present while drafting Wentz for the future. Never again do I want to be caught as unprepared as we were in the past when Aikman retired or this year when Romo was injured.

And there is no debate that quarterback is far and away the rarest and most important commodity in football.

Kellen Moore is NOT an NFL caliber starting quarterback, nor is he a quality backup...time to move on from him...

Kellen Moore is not a backup.

He is a project.

I saw nothing to hang your hat on in that last game.

Washington was playing soft the whole game and he rolled up some yards b/w the 50's..

but I didn't see much other than that.

We can not base another season on a guy like him as backup.

Not many backups are in fact top shelf starters.

Someone will want to move up for that sole purpose. Use the rewards for a down movement to excellerate the defensive side of ball. One can get a project at QB and a solid running back lower down in this draft.

So pay 5 mill for Wentz to sit on the bench and another 2-3 mill for McCoy. Glad you aren't the GM.

First, you let me know when McCoy costs $3 million. More over-exaggeration because your actual case sucks.

Likewise pom-pom shaker. You just keep mindlessly cheering each and every thing they do or don't do and leave the actual thinking to the adults.

He's made 1.5 million last year and may get even more than 3 mil this year child.

Opinions vary. I see a clueless instigator who doesn't know much of anything other than 'Yay Cowboys!'

Sure thing he will. You come and tell me when it happens. Otherwise, it's just more of your baseless, unsupported nonsense.
