Not sure we want Mike picking his own DC.

If McCarthy is back, Zimmer will be too.

I'm more interested in who the OC will be. Doubt Schottenheimer is brought back. That position needs a new face, whether Mike continues calling plays or not.
Id like to see Reich

Wonder if they've been preparing AL Harris to be the DC because his duties increased this season.

Dennis Allen would be my pick from this list.

I would think knowing this is likely his last shot, Mike would want his own guy. Someone he can count on for the next 3-5 years.

Didn't he pick Nolan first? I'm not sure I even want him picking his guys. All of his picks have been uninspired. Al Harris is the exception.

Maybe I should change my opinion some about Solari. I thought he sucked, but maybe it's our vets and paid players who suck, because the line sure was better with the young guys.

Not sure Shoty does anything. Maybe the TE coach (Wells i think) is ok? Our TEs do seem to develop, but at the same time Schoon and SpanFord developed Fergy regressed.

Besides all that Zimmer got as screwed by injuries as anyone. I thought our D did fairly well the second half of the season. It's funny MM will retain his job with the injury excuse but not give his D coordinator the same. I dont know it matters on one hand Zim implied he wasn't wanted on the other hand he seemed to sound like he was ready to call it a career.

My biggest reason for wanting Zimmer to return is having a D coordinator who will absolutely blast the need for DTs in the media.

It's a legit question coz even if Mike returns, he may want to choose his own new defensive coordinator. Besides, there's nothing to suggest Zimm is coming back either way. Remember, MM's DC during his tenure with the Packers was a 3-4 guy.

Like a if’s, but if MM returns and Zimmer retires, they promote within with Al Harris, he was promoted last year and is ready to run his own defense

i also remember that last part of McCarthy's years he has some of the worst defenses in the NFL ,.. and that coupled with him hiring one of the worst DCs we've ever had here in Mike Nolan ..

Plus ..it has been the front office management that has hired and responsible for handpicking the last two DCs we've had under his regime ala Dan Quinn and Mike Zimmer .

So okay , we can do the DC candidates list- but, imo .. it will Again be the Cowboys Management team to choose and handpick the next new incoming DC ... Not McCarthy.

Is Harris under contract for 2025 or is he free to go on Wednesday? If his contract is over won’t he be Washington-bound?
maybe...but he didn't give the impression he doesn't want to be here.
he's been with mccarthy since day 1 here.
he's the one staff member we can't lose in my opinion.
our secondary improved night and day under his watch.
he had as much to do with our d getting turnovers as anybody.

I thought his being given the Asst. Head Coach title was done to block him from following Quinn to the Commanders. But if his contract is over he can pretty much leave if he feels like it. This is where Jerry’s lack of decisiveness can be problematic. The guys on the coaching staff will want to lock down employment quickly, while the most options are available.

We don’t know and it’s never been disclosed publicly.

However, since he was promoted to assistant head coach less than a year ago, it would appear unlikely that it was a one year deal. That’s just not typical.

Coordinator is not typically seen as a promotion over assistant head coach.

So, it’s unlikely he could leave for anything less than a HC position.

He could be named the Cowboys DC and still retain his Assistant Head Coach title. It would probably give him some more money and be an additional feather in his cap.

If he signed a one year deal, then he can do whatever he wants.

If saleh doesn’t get a hc job which seems like a fair assumption, it makes all the sense in the world he would go back to San Fran to be their d coordinator unless there was some strife between him and shanahan I’m not privy to

I believe his contract has not yet been renewed. He can be poached next week. He came in with McCarthy. He wanted and interviewed for the DC position that went to Zimmer. He’ll likely follow McCarthy out if McCarthy is not retained. His stated goal is to become a head coach. He’s 49. He’ll be looking for the right opportunity.
