FRISCO, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys aren’t so sure defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence will be able to play Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals now that his four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy is over.

Lawrence took part in a limited part of Wednesday’s practice, his first since the end of the preseason. He was on the field during open portion of practice on Thursday.

When asked if they will have to monitor Lawrence’s snaps Sunday, coach Jason Garrett said, "We’re not to that point yet with him. We’re just going to see how he does today, and hopefully he’ll continue to progress."

Lawrence had back surgery in the offseason and did not take part in the organized team activities or minicamp. He was able practice during training camp and play in the preseason games. Two weeks ago on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, owner and general manager Jerry Jones hinted at some issue with Lawrence’s health, but the defensive end said he was fine.

On Tuesday on The Fan, Jones said Lawrence would play.

Garrett said Lawrence was limited Wednesday because of the time off, as well as a back injury.

We could sure use him. We're getting almost no pressure elsewhere.

These back injuries are killing them this year.

I wish they would do this to Jerry, so we are not subjected to his ramblings anymore.

If his first two seasons are any indication he won't be making any impact until December. It takes him half a season to get going.

Oh well, just hope he is ready for the Packer and Philly games.

The Cowboys need to add at least 2 proven pass rushing DE's next off season.

I am not counting Gregory or Tapper as one of those 2.

Why can't Jerry just not talk to the media? Just not mention injuries, or health, or really, anything at all about the players or upcoming game.

Just stick to contracts, the Star, and revenue.

That would be super.

I hear this complaint but I never get it. Like I usually just ignore what he says but its like some people can't resist and complain about something they can easily tune out.

HIs team and maybe he likes to talk. Doesn't bother me.

So this guy hasn't practiced or been in pads throughout his suspension, and he's had nothing to do for over a month but receive treatment, yet his back is an issue? What the heck is going to happen to his back when he actually plays football?! Unbelievable.

It sure looks like Garrett isn't at all sure whether to even utilize the services of Lawrence, much less consider giving him a snap count. Actually, it appears as though the surgery on his back may not have been nearly as successful as they had hoped. Not encouraging at this juncture but perhaps time and enough rest to allow proper healing might help. In the meantime, an anemic pass is wanting relief. Ouch!
