Why does the Cowboy's offensive starters being ranked as 7th oldest seem wrong to me? The OL is very young. I wonder about the data used in this article, however, I've posted it here anyway for discussion sakes.

All 32 NFL teams' projected offensive starters, ranked by average age

Over the last week, we've done studies of the NFL's 32 teams, and ranked their projected offensive starters at each position from oldest to youngest. In case you missed them, they can be found here:

Using the results of those studies, here is where each teams' offensive starters rank overall, from oldest to youngest. To note, we used the same format for every team: 1 QB, 1 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 5 OL. For the purpose of fitting all the data into one table, we combined the three wide receivers' ages with the tight end in one column, and combined all five OL starters' ages in one column.

The age rankings:

Take out Free in a year or so, it becomes much different.

Witten is on the downside of his career, at this point. No doubt. Cowboys need to get more of a rotation going there.

And Romo's age/back is the team's single greatest vulnerability. By far.

I imagine McFadden skewed the age, which won't matter, as he's a stopgap measure.

Other than 3-4 guys it's a refreshingly young group.

These are meaningless statistics. If Collins took Free's job, we'd be at about 26.5. If Randle starts it is 26.2. More importantly it isn't the average age of the starters that is an issue - it is whether you have guys in the pipeline to replace them. At OL we certainly do.

Wow. As I look closer, this analysis is totally screwed up.

The writers simply took current age in years. That's fine but you can't provide meaningful results to two decimal places based on that approach. What this means is that any differences of less than a year are really indistinguishable based on the calculations.

Stupid. Stupid analysis

that is when the youngest roster is misleading. Realistically the O line is where you have to worry and that is exactly where we are the youngest.

But I thought they generally had the longest careers? You know the whole O Linemen don't even peak until they are 30 and such...
We are old at QB and TE. Being old at QB is the most worrisome although Romo is the one guy that I can see sticking for another 3 years, maaaaaaaybe 4 at his age and be good still.
But it is still worrisome because QB is the most important position on the field.

Witten? That guy is already running in sand (and still gets open) and in the next year or so will be running in quicksand (and just might still be getting open, but at that point I doubt it).

Starters? Sure. Offense? Probably not.

Over 30. Over average age currently. Under average age. 25 or under.

Romo
Witten
Free
Clutts

McFadden
Bryant
Leary
Beasley

T. Williams
Dunbar
R. Williams
Frederick
Hanna
Smith
Randle
Martin
Escobar
Collins

2 things that could really swig the average.

1. if they're considering Clutts a starter over Beasley.
2. If Collins ends up starting.

Note: used current ages. But only Dez will reach 27 next year.

Pick all the top QBs that are older and you'll find most of the teams near the top of that list.
Not very indicative overall

Peyton
Brady
Brees
Romo
Rivers

Not sure what everyone is getting so worked up about. Yes, we have players that skew it dramatically. No, the roster age isn't a disaster. But is certainly of importance that our quarterback is 35 and not 25 as far as the long term impact of the team goes, because that's really what builds the team as a contender.

Man poor Browns .. They suck and their old...
Look at the 10 youngest teams ... Outside of Seattle and Green Bay not many of those teams will be worth a darn over the next 3 years even

The thing is how many true franchise QBs under age 30 - I think the only young guy right now in the conversation is Luck. All the other franchise type guys are in their 30s:

Brady
Manning, P
Roethlisberger
Rivers
Romo
Brees

Ryan
Flacco
Manning, E

Obviously you'd love to have a young franchise QB but they don't grow on trees. I don't think the two guys taken at the top of this draft are going to be franchise type guys either but only time will tell. I'm not convinced about Carr, Bortles, Tannehill or Bridgewater, either. We've already seen recent high picks like RG3, Christian Ponder, Jake Locker, Cam Newton, Blaine Gabbert, Brandon Weeden and EJ Manuel bust.

This is part of the reason I argue for always having a second first round pick. You just keep trading and trading into the future until you end up in a year where you are in shooting distance of a franchise QB that you can target.
