The Cowboys have moved on from high priced players like DeMarcus Ware, Andre Gurode etc. We have moved on from solid if not spectacular players in Carr, Mo, Church, and Leary. All of the last group could still play at least arguably at a reasonably good level.

We let Murray walk in free agency. We seem to have stopped throwing money away at over priced free agents. All of the above were at least in part based on salary cap implications.

The current outliers are Dez and Witten. Arguably, Ware was a better player and represented greater value than either one of these two. We extended Witten as a placeholder last year, but it is not guaranteed.

We have seen quite a bit of smoke which indicates that Dez is a little bit on the hot seat. I don't think there is any reason NOT to have a discussion with him about a paycut prior to the draft, unless they have already decided to move on from him.

If the Cowboys talk to Dez about a paycut, prior to the draft, then I think it could go either way. They may keep Dez or they may cut him and move on. If they DONT talk to Dez about a paycut then I think the team has already made up its mind and is moving on from Dez and will draft a receiver in the top half of the draft.

Witten may have already agreed to move on but the Cowboys may be masking their intentions with the Witten extension with no guaranteed money. Maybe this is wishful thinking on my part.

The Cowboys have actually made some tough cap related decisions since Red Ball came on board. Keeping Dez and Witten at their current cap numbers flies directly in the face of the direction the Cowboys have been moving during Red Ball's tenure. I didn't always agree with the decisions made (Murray and Leary specifically) but there is zero doubt that the cap was the single largest factor in letting them walk.

Awesome post. Total savings by cutting Dez and Witten equals $15 million. That could be used to re-sign Hitchens or pursue a free agent we may have actually heard of or seen play.
Cutting Dez and Witten to resign Hitchens...
Ummm... I uh...
I know @Verdict ain't gon' love me for this, but come on...

And I've been on record on my views of Dez and Witt., but this be bad.

It could be argued Hitchens is more productive than either one of those guys at this point. Hitchens is never going to be a star, but the Cowboys have nothing at linebacker except Sean Lee, Jaylon Smith, and their lengthy injury histories.

This team needs to rebuild it's entire receiving corps instead of relying on the slowpokes Dez and Witten have become.

Redball? You mean Clappy the Clown?

I have never been more down and hopeless in regards to my confidence level in this franchise. With Garrett and Jones the two boobs running this outfit I have NO hope whatsoever that they can keep up with other franchises in the race of the NFL. For a while I did hold out minimal hope that maybe once Stephen took over things might change. But after listening to this fool wonder out loud about why they haven't made a trade in, forever, its just more of the same stupidity.

I would be shocked if the Dallas Cowboy EVER won another championship in my lifetime. And I am middle aged.

If the term "hater" was ever more apply used to define what I am, then right on. I absolutely hate this franchise. I hate Jones, I hate Garrett, I could care less about 90% of the joke players on this team. I find myself laughing out loud more than anything these days. The Cowboys are a joke at this point. I almost find myself rooting for them to get even more embarrassed just so I can laugh at Jerry Jones and see that stupid look on his face at home games in the owners box.

Just being honest. Other then a good run of drafts this franchise does NOTHING else well. It really is pathetic to watch.

Then go argue over there... in that corner over there.
Yeah... that corner. I know there's nobody there! Convince someone to join you!
Do I have to do everything for everybody?

We can just agree to disagree. I understand your viewpoint and respect it. I'm not here to change anybody's mind, just to share viewpoints with fellow Cowboys fans.

To me, the cap hits of Dez and Witten do not match their production; and it started pre-Dak Prescott, as to not start that argument. The Cowboys have held onto players long past their prime for sentimental reasons before, and it's a big reason this team tailed off in both the 1980's and 1990's.

If Dallas was willing to show DeMarcus Ware the door when he still had something left in the tank, I can see them doing the same with Bryant and Witten.

Not a hard feeling among us! I'd cheer with you any day.

In terms of how the rest of the league views them, I think they are viewed as a decent enough team in drafting the right talent early.

They haven't had a true first round bomb since Bobby Carpenter.

While that is a small, teeny tiny feather in their cap, they act like it is a huge plume of them.

What they do with the players after they are on the roster is pretty laughable.

They overvalue their own, don't bother to evaluate other team's talent and think that eventually, they will just outdraft everyone else.

Mike Evans just got 83m for 5yrs from TB

JLandry is about to get at least 16m a year from CLE

Dez at 2/25m doesn't look so bad
Witten can be reduced down to a 2.3m cap hit

These aren't the drones you are looking for

No way hoser...
Just thought I would throw some Canadian humor in there.

Wait....This front office has credibility?

:lmao2::lmao::laugh:

I'm just waiting for them to make a trade so they can sell to the public that they are doing something...like Cleveland:grin:

This. 100% right on point.

NFL reality financing is difficult to Gage. Short Windows of opportunity make teams want to win now. Ergo, cap disasters and unrealistic free agency moves. On the other hand, the ever present threat of serious injury makes it hard to plan for the future. We gave romo a huge deal and he got injured. We signed Sean Lee to a big deal, despite his injury history, and he missed all of 2014. Imo, stay as far below the cap as possible so you have money if the right deal comes along or the injury bug hits. Expect lots of roster turnover.
