The Cowboys have moved on from high priced players like DeMarcus Ware, Andre Gurode etc. We have moved on from solid if not spectacular players in Carr, Mo, Church, and Leary. All of the last group could still play at least arguably at a reasonably good level.
We let Murray walk in free agency. We seem to have stopped throwing money away at over priced free agents. All of the above were at least in part based on salary cap implications.
The current outliers are Dez and Witten. Arguably, Ware was a better player and represented greater value than either one of these two. We extended Witten as a placeholder last year, but it is not guaranteed.
We have seen quite a bit of smoke which indicates that Dez is a little bit on the hot seat. I don't think there is any reason NOT to have a discussion with him about a paycut prior to the draft, unless they have already decided to move on from him.
If the Cowboys talk to Dez about a paycut, prior to the draft, then I think it could go either way. They may keep Dez or they may cut him and move on. If they DONT talk to Dez about a paycut then I think the team has already made up its mind and is moving on from Dez and will draft a receiver in the top half of the draft.
Witten may have already agreed to move on but the Cowboys may be masking their intentions with the Witten extension with no guaranteed money. Maybe this is wishful thinking on my part.
The Cowboys have actually made some tough cap related decisions since Red Ball came on board. Keeping Dez and Witten at their current cap numbers flies directly in the face of the direction the Cowboys have been moving during Red Ball's tenure. I didn't always agree with the decisions made (Murray and Leary specifically) but there is zero doubt that the cap was the single largest factor in letting them walk.
