I admit the when the ball goes to TWill that I think "just hold on to it"; however, I wanted to review the past 2 games and look at some stats to see how he compares to Dez in terms of drops or incomplete passes.
Dez
Career 386 of 618, 56 TDs, 14.2 avg
62% catch rate
14% of catches are TDs
TWill
Career 90 of 153, 14 TDs, 16.7 avg
59% catch rate
16% of catches are TDs
From the career stats his catch rate 59% is just slightly worse than Dez at 62%.
From the past 2 games:
Dez was was 5 of 7 for 48 against the Giants.
TWill:
Eagles
4 of 7 for 84
1 throw just a few inches too high.
1 throw un-catchable over his head in the end zone.
1 throw was initially a catch but knocked out of his hand by the defender.
He also had another catch but it didn't count because of a penalty on Tyron.
Giants
5 of 8 for 60
1 catch was a drop
2 in-completions were batted away by the defender
What appear to be drops in by TWill this season are primarily good plays by defenders to knock the ball away or out of his hands after the catch. Only 1 pass was what I would call a pure drop and it was on a high degree of difficultly type pass between 2 defenders.
It would be nice if he could have maintained possession of the 1 catch in the Eagles game that was ripped out but it happens. The ball was ripped away from Escobar after a catch and his hands are huge so I'm not going to blame everything on TWill's smallish hands.
Dez dropped a super easy catch in the Giants game with no defenders nearby so drops do happen.
I didn't use Beasley in the comparison because his catches are often on short throws and he if often basically uncontested at the point of the catch so his catch rate should be high.
In general it seems that TWill's in-completions happen when he is between two defenders that are in close proximity. In these situations it is difficult to get separation because if he moves away from 1 defender he is moving towards another defender.
TWill is obviously not a high end #1 WR but he is a quality #2 WR. He'll have to function at a #1 with Dez out and I think he will be OK. IMO, he's as good as Miles Austin was back when he was the #1 WR here.
It appears that Butler is going to get some snaps and Street did have a catch against the Eagles. It helps that the Cowboys passing game is not just focused on the WRs but also features the TEs and RBs. Dunbar has been terrific and Escobar has been quite good. Randle and McFadden are also very good receivers. Swaim even had a catch.
