I admit the when the ball goes to TWill that I think "just hold on to it"; however, I wanted to review the past 2 games and look at some stats to see how he compares to Dez in terms of drops or incomplete passes.

Dez
Career 386 of 618, 56 TDs, 14.2 avg
62% catch rate
14% of catches are TDs

TWill
Career 90 of 153, 14 TDs, 16.7 avg
59% catch rate
16% of catches are TDs

From the career stats his catch rate 59% is just slightly worse than Dez at 62%.

From the past 2 games:

Dez was was 5 of 7 for 48 against the Giants.

TWill:

Eagles
4 of 7 for 84
1 throw just a few inches too high.
1 throw un-catchable over his head in the end zone.
1 throw was initially a catch but knocked out of his hand by the defender.
He also had another catch but it didn't count because of a penalty on Tyron.

Giants
5 of 8 for 60
1 catch was a drop
2 in-completions were batted away by the defender

What appear to be drops in by TWill this season are primarily good plays by defenders to knock the ball away or out of his hands after the catch. Only 1 pass was what I would call a pure drop and it was on a high degree of difficultly type pass between 2 defenders.

It would be nice if he could have maintained possession of the 1 catch in the Eagles game that was ripped out but it happens. The ball was ripped away from Escobar after a catch and his hands are huge so I'm not going to blame everything on TWill's smallish hands.

Dez dropped a super easy catch in the Giants game with no defenders nearby so drops do happen.

I didn't use Beasley in the comparison because his catches are often on short throws and he if often basically uncontested at the point of the catch so his catch rate should be high.

In general it seems that TWill's in-completions happen when he is between two defenders that are in close proximity. In these situations it is difficult to get separation because if he moves away from 1 defender he is moving towards another defender.

TWill is obviously not a high end #1 WR but he is a quality #2 WR. He'll have to function at a #1 with Dez out and I think he will be OK. IMO, he's as good as Miles Austin was back when he was the #1 WR here.

It appears that Butler is going to get some snaps and Street did have a catch against the Eagles. It helps that the Cowboys passing game is not just focused on the WRs but also features the TEs and RBs. Dunbar has been terrific and Escobar has been quite good. Randle and McFadden are also very good receivers. Swaim even had a catch.

I've been a TWill supporter since day one. The notion on here during the pre-season that someone, possibly an undrafted FA would rise up and take his job was preposterous. The body catcher business is about as overblown as possible. He has good hand and he's explosive, but most of all, he gets open at crucial times.

I'm a fan of Williams and typically like him, but I've said it before and I'll say it again. Because of my expectations, I hold him to a high standard. Drops because it was a tough catch or because a defender knocked it out AFTER he grabbed the ball are not excuses I find acceptable. If you get both hands on the ball, you are PAID to win the catch over the defender. Every time it doesn't happen, you did not succeed. It's happened too many times the last two games. He needs to clean it up and earn his next contract.

Unfortunately with Williams, even "good plays by the defender" sometimes only happen because he wants to body catch the ball. There are a lot of times where if he attacked the ball with his hands, he could have it locked up before the defender hits him and he could hold on to it.

But I don't complain too much about him, because he's still given us very very good production for the opportunities he's gotten. We're going to need him to keep it up to get through the next 8 weeks until Romo gets back.

You've been charitable by characterizing one of T-Wills incompletions in the Eagles game as "just a few inches too high." The pass was high, for sure. But it looked to my like T-Will short-armed it and could have made the catch if he had extended fully.

In any event, I agree with your more general view that T-Will has been solid.

Certainly not as good as Miles during his peak here.

I agree at Miles peak, otherwise I see lots better performance from Twill. M Austin usually just flat out dropped some easy passes. Twill is almost a #1 receiver and we are getting the benefit of his rookie contract. TWill has a chance to make some money this season with some high performance games and I think that is a motivator for him.

I've studied Dez and Terrance probably more than any other WRs in the league. Part of the problem is that Williams has a very small catch radius and only really thrives off of a few routes. If he can run a dig or a slant, he does well. If asked to catch the ball away from his body, he will struggle.

The catch rate stat can be a little misleading. Dez is the player you throw it to when you wouldn't throw it to T Williams. Meaning the ball can be a little forced knowing that Dez will win the battle. Also I can remember more passes that were essentially throw aways go Dez's way over Twill.

That said I don't think T Williams has been terrible at all. Just not a guy I want my QB throwing any questionable passes to.
