Smith, Woodson, Sharpe among Pro Hall candidates

CANTON, Ohio (AP)—Defensive end Bruce Smith, defensive back Rod Woodson and tight end Shannon Sharpe are among first-year candidates for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The list includes 110 players, seven coaches and 16 contributors, including former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and longtime team owners Bud Adams, Jerry Jones, Art Modell and Ralph Wilson.
Hall of Fame selectors will choose 25 candidates who will be announced later this month as semifinalists. The field will then be narrowed to 15 by a mail ballot. The inductees will be selected from among those 15 and the two senior nominees previously announced, Bob Hayes and Claude Humphrey. They were selected in August by a senior selection committee.
The class of inductees will be chosen at the selection committee’s annual meeting on Saturday, January 31, 2009, in Tampa, Fla., the day before the 2009 Super Bowl. As few as four and as many as seven can be selected.

To be considered for Hall of Fame election, a nominated player or coach must be retired for at least five years. A contributor, who has made outstanding career contributions to pro football in capacities other than playing or coaching, may still be active in his pro football career.

wonder what the case for bud adams' nomination is? that's the tennessee owner, right, formerly the houston oilers...

in fact i'm not real sure i follow any of the owner nominations. some of them have SB rings, but other than that for what other reasons have they been nominated?

Bud Adams? Art Modell? You've got to be kidding me! Those guys suck!!!

Adams has been one of the worst owners in NFL history and Modell will NEVER be forgiven for firing Paul Brown or moving the Browns to Baltimore. Screw him and the horse he rode in on! Who's next, Bill Bidwell? Georgia Frontierre? The Fords? Sheesh!

I don't think any owner should be nominated for the HoF unless he has been more than just an owner. Adams hasn't done anything except collect checks.

Jerry is also a GM and has been instrumental in a number of changes to the league over the years so I could see his nomination but I think it is still a bit early for him.

Lastly, the HoF should be for players and coaches, people who were actually in the game, not guys who were behind the scenes but that's just my opinion. Unless it was a guy like Tex Schramm or Pete Rozelle, who had a major influence on the league, they shouldn't get in simply for writing and cashing checks.

As much as I hate to say it, without Jerry Jones. There is no Jimmy Johnson. There is no triplets, there is no dynasty, there is no 3 lombardis. Even if we don't win another ring while hes alive, he will still go down as one of the best ever.

Besides, the NFL's popularity and major revenue has more to do with the success of the Cowboys in the 90s than anything else. The salary cap was invented because of Jerry, the salary cap will be removed because of Jerry.

Jerry isn't just an owner, or general manager, hes a fan too. Thats a hell of a lot more than you can say for the rest of those fat cats who don't give a damn about their team, only the $$$$

Bruce Smith, Rod Woodson, and Shannon Sharpe all deserve to get in. Great players.

Congrats to Jerry Jones on getting a nomination. Not sure he'll get in this time, probably won't, but he'll eventually get in there I believe.

I thought a retired coach was only 1 year, not 5.

Then Jerry can't go in, he hasn't retired from coaching yet :lmao2:

well said, thumper. there are only a very few owners i could see in the hall. jerry maybe based on being a GM as you mentioned. i think he also was instrumental in the exponential increases in TV revenue. didn't he lead the charge from CBS to Fox years ago?

Georgia would be a far, far better candidate for induction than Bud Adams.
What were the nominators thinking?
