Cowboys intend to keep Garrett

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett is entering the final three games of his contract, yet Dallas is determined to keep him in place, sources told ESPN, as owner Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones have told people they intend to bring him back next season.

Tim Heitman/USA TODAY SportsAfter three straight 8-8 seasons, Jason Garrett has clinched his first winning season in Dallas.

Even though a playoff spot still is at stake, and could be heavily influenced by the result of Sunday's game in Philadelphia, the Jones family is squarely behind Garrett and the growth he has demonstrated to them.

Plus, Garrett already has clinched his first winning season with the team after three seasons of finishing 8-8.

"Obviously, it's an improvement this year, and an improvement at a time when a lot of people didn't think we would improve," Stephen Jones said on The Ticket (1310 AM) in Dallas on Wednesday night. "They actually thought we might go backwards, and here we are at nine wins with three games to go. We've got a lot of work to do. But I really think Jason is the right guy for this job, and I know Jerry thinks the same thing. I certainly see Jason being a big part of our future."

First place in the NFC East is on the line in Sunday's game against the Eagles. If the Cowboys win their final three games, they will win the division, but a loss Sunday could mean they'll need help to make the postseason as a wild card.

ESPN.com's Todd Archer contributed to this report.

Apparently 9 wins was good enough to seal the deal.

I have mixed feeling about this.
I believe JG is an average HC at best, due to clock management issues and poor X and O stratagy.
He does seem to do a good job at keeping the players on an even keel through the wins and losses
and his teams never give up and start mailing it in.
I just wish we would get a great HC and not settle for average.
JG does not rock the boat and lets Jerry do whatever he wants so I think they will maintain the statas quo.

He will be extended in the offseason. Jerry loves him some JG. He won't be fired until a new qb comes in. Then hopefully he brings in an offensive guy.

You say this like you want it to happen.

It must be conflicting watching the games these years for hard-core Garrett haters who thought we'd end up 5-11. Each win gets us closer to an extension some of you guys must just hate the thought of. And you know it's not going to be a one or two-year extension when it happens, either.

Not saying that to rub in the inevitable, but just a comment on the weird situation you're sort of in.

First things first. What JJ says and what JJ does is always two different things.

We could lose all three games and finish 9-7, and Garrett would still be resigned. It's a done deal, just a question of how much he is worth come the off-season.

Jerry doesn't want to start over again.

as long as his main job is head cheer leader and he is kept as far away from playcalling as possible then i am ok with this.

No jerry expected this team to suck like most people so he wouldve stayed regardless. He'll be here another 5 years.

Okay. He'll be here b/c he's earned it for the most part this season, not b/c YOUR attempt at predicting another .500 or sub .500 season flopped and you now feel compelled to blame JJ.

This does not surprise me. I am sure he will be hear for a long time given Jerry has proven he would rather be comfortable with his coach than win. Personally, I would have gotten rid of him after last year. I think he should have to win at least one playoff game to keep his job. His long "PROCESS" has gotten really old but I guess Jerry being comfortable is the most important thing.

He needs his clock management duties stripped too. This guy is just a Jerry puppet he can't coach worth a **** but he can clap it up.
