Cowboys Redshirt Rookies Give Dallas 2017 NFL Draft A Kickstart

http://cowboyszone.com/2017/04/cowboys-redshirt-rookies-give-dallas-2017-nfl-draft-a-kickstart.html

LB Jaylon Smith – “Without the injury issues, he’s one of the top player’s in this draft.”

DE Charles Tapper – “Raw with room to develop. It will take more than one off-season for him to learn his position in the NFL.”

TE Rico Gathers – “Gathers is a prospect with an upside that is worth waiting for.”

Are you kidding me?

Some may want to focus on Jaylon Smith learning to play with a brace while dealing with his recovering nerve injury and lament his place on the list. A valid thought that could easily blind one to the rewards that are there for the taking. Is Jaylon going to be the player he was before the injury? No. Will he be worth a high second round pick? Ahhh, that remains to be seen and in reality matters very little. The pick has been made. It’s done. Jerry Jones is all hung up on draft value and the ego-centric stroking that brings. All Garrett cares about is the talent at his disposal and in truth, Jaylon Smith is an instinctive football player who will make the Cowboys a better team when he is on the field. Was he worth the pick? That conversation is for another piece on a different day...

lol, nothing like a writer telling us how long it takes an NFL player to learn his position in the game.

Yeah I would love to see how long he thought it would take Dak to learn how to play in a pro style offense.

Those three redshirts are intriguing particularly Rico. Rico is picking up blocking techniques I don't know about assignment recognition.
The floor on JSmith is a solid LB but his leg muscle movements should stimulate nerve functions.
Tapper is even more the mystery. His times make him a second round value possibly in this years draft [Willis].

The writer, Stephen Van Over, is very likely assuming Jaylon Smith won't have his peroneal nerve re-firing anytime soon. He might, indeed, not be the player he was before the injury if that doesn't materialize but of course, that's just a situation that remains to be seen.

As it now stands, nobody knows for sure whether that nerve will re-fire in time for him to take the field in live action. It seems to me that making assumptions now without having first-hand knowledge of his medical situation is taking a lot for granted. Everyone wants to be the expert.

Hopefully, Rico Gathers and Tapper will develop into capable starters eventually but only time will tell. Their talent does seem promising, though.

RTBS... remains to be seen. I wish them all the best of luck but I'm not going to celebrate until they prove themselves as contributors.

Wouldn't we all love a player saying...that is a rookie reporter, he / she needs time to get to know the game.....

But then again, there are reporters that have been at their jobs for 30 plus years and still haven't learned.

that's a lot riding on three players who may never make make much of a impact we need to draft players who can play now not redshirt players time will tell I hope they do but I really don't expect much from them

We're definitely banking on Jaylon being healthy and this team going to the next level with him on the field but that doesn't totally fix everything considering our secondary hasn't been good in years.

Actually, the secondary was very good last year. It is the reason we beat the Packers in the first game. There were plays where Aaron Rodgers had all day to pass but couldn't find an open receiver.

However, we now have to rebuild the secondary.

They were also the reason we lost the playoff game.

The secondary was good at times but I think our system is fairly "secondary friendly". Our defenders are taught to keep the play in front of them and not give up the big play. Rod is fine with a player giving up catches as long as they get tackled right away.

Now credit to the players for playing within the system but these guys were hardly asked to sit on an island. The efficiency of our offense also helped everyone on the defense as well since our defense was usually playing with a sizable lead.

We didn't get exposed. That's every year. I'm glad we have change in secondary. It didn't work for years. We need to fix the line and secondary finally

I hope Jerry and Mcclay and company are over the so-called "draft value" picks and stop drafting red-shirt players. We need players, more importantly, play makers more than anything.
I couldn't agree more, and I was pissed when they got Gregory. Anyone who can't stay off the weed long enough to pass a drug test at the combine shouldn't even be a red flag; it should be a black flag, as in DO NOT DRAFT.

Yea, I hope Jaylon does really well....lately, with our last few picks it seems like we go into the draft without a 2nd rd pick.

I love Jalen and support the pic overall.

That said I think the right thing to do would have been to trade the pic we took jalen with last year for a first and possibly a second or third in this years draft since we were going to have to wait a year anyhow.

Could have turned into a top ten pic in this draft which coud have netted an equal uninjured prospect like R foster or M Hooker or D Barnett etc.
