IRVING -- On the same day the Cowboys gave Jay Ratliff a new deal, the Cowboys restructured quarterback Tony Romo's contract and cleared more than $6.5 million of salary cap room.

Ninety percent of Romo's 2011 base salary of $9 million was converted into an $8.1 million roster bonus that will be prorated over the length of the contract, which originally ran through 2013

By doing so, the Cowboys will save $1.1 million in cap space annually. Earlier this summer, the Cowboys restructured the contracts of outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware and receiver Miles Austin. With Romo's deal reconfigured, the Cowboys are approximately $18 million below the salary cap. That unused space can be carried into next season to account for the dead money remaining from the contracts given to released players, including tackle Marc Colombo, guard Leonard Davis, receiver Roy Williams and running back Marion Barber.

Someone tell Norm Hitchges about this -- he is convinced the Cowboys will be in cap hell next year.

The Dallas Cowboys got busy reworking a handful of contracts to free up cap space for this season, a reality that returned after one uncapped season.

The most recent? The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports quarterback Tony Romo has restructured his contract. Romo was scheduled to earn a base salary of $9 million this season. Now, he’ll get $810,000 with the remaining $8.1 million now in the form of a bonus
