I think if Broaddus is only looking for explosiveness on his first step, then he is going to favor a lot of players over Charlton. Charlton isn't about having that quick first step. He's just not that kind of player. If he's going to succeed in this league, it's going to be by using his long arms to keep tackles off his body enough so he can make moves to get an edge on them, then using his flexibility/bend to get around them. He's got enough speed and flexibility to succeed if he uses his length well.
Broaddus acts like there is only one way to be a quality pass rusher while the league has proven that that isn't the case as recent as last year when Bosa was being knocked for not having that elite quickness.. Maybe that's why Broaddus isn't a scout anymore.
He gets it in his mind that he doesn't like a guy, and then that's what he sees.
Sounds like there really wasn't anything to see with the linemen in the rookie camp here, anyway. That's ok. I can wait for training camp at this point.

That is waaay more complicated than Broaddus can comprehend.Broaddus needs to look at the scheme UM was running, it was more of a read and react I believe, so he would seem to have a slower first step.
Broaddus is good at reporting what is going on, but his scouting and analysis has always been horrible. And he uses his personal opinions way too much in his evaluations, instead of just true evaluating.
The opinions right or wrong needs to left to us fans....LOL....hence, this discussion board...

People should come to terms with the fact that Broaddus is a dummy and probably couldn't beat Claiborne on the Wonderlic test.
Parcells fired him for being a dummy. He tried and failed to get another job in scouting.

That was me holding back. The full version would not meet the rules here.
Dang, x, don't hold back.
Broaddus reports things every year during this time period where fans can't see the players. Once we can see them in TC and Preseason games, it never matches what Broaddus reported.Well, Charlton wasn't reading and reacting in rookie minicamp. If he looked slower on initial quickness than the other DEs, it's likely because he is. I don't think he's going to win many first-step battles, and if that was all that went into making a good DE, then we'd be in trouble. Fortunately, not all successful DEs have to be built the same.
I agree, though, that a good scouts considers everything about the player including the scheme his team is using. Two of the players we drafted last year, Maliek Collins and Charles Tapper, appealed to us because we believed their skills were better-suited to our scheme than what their college teams used. If Broaddus is only basing his judgment on first step, then he's missing the rest of the picture.

His reports almost ALWAYS match his pre-draft opinions.
It is uncanny how often I've heard Broaddus either denigrate or rave about a player at this time of year and then when I went back to see his previous comments about them, it always matched. If he liked them in the past, he'll claim they're great now and vise-versa. I guess that's how some scouts try to cover their backside. That's fair. Without being able to see them more, it's impossible to really say if what's being said matches up or if it is pre-judged..
