"get more comfortable with the 3-4 defense"...how much longer does he need?

I wish he would have said that he wasn't happy and plans on losing some weight and hitting the gym more often.

People can laugh at that as being an excuse, but I truly do believe it's legit.

From Roy's perspective, things look different. We all know that Cover2 is still Cover2 and so on, but everything is going to look a little different. The bodies in front of him are positioned differently, and there are more guys going in multiple directions. Yeah, I believe that has an affect.

Now, Roy probably should have overcome some of this earlier. I won't dispute that. However, last year's defense was different than the defense before that. The responsibilities are different in some instances.

I just really do believe that it changes things for a player. In Roy's case, I believe it has negatively impacted him. That's not to say he can't or won't overcome it, because I believe he will. But it does take some time.

Edit: I think Dave Campo is going to have a real positive influence on Roy. Experience tells me that it helps when you have someone behind you who knows what you can do. There is a psychological benefit of knowing that Campo has seen you do some great things. There should be some trust, familiarity, and some other things to make Roy more of an impact player this season.

Finally, I still say that Roy is much better than he's given credit for. The guy is bashed so hard around here that you wouldn't think he did anything good on the field last year, and that's just not true. He made a lot of stops on third down that held teams, and he wasn't nearly as bad in coverage as some have made him out to be. Unfortunately, perception sometimes warps reality.

I would really appreciate more of a recap of what Roy says, if someone is interested.

I think he needs to get his confidence aggressiveness back.

And for those wanting a change..be careful what you ask for. Change is not always good.

Oh come on, Keith Davis started the game he was suspended and no one noticed a difference. I'm wondering if we can put a bionic knee in Justin Beriault and get the same performance.

I hope this whole re-dedication thing works as much as the next guy, but the reality is he was a woefully average safety last year at best. If there is not a stark improvement towards what his talent potential truly is, there is no change short of re-signing Tony Dixon that will be noticeably detrimental.

Ah Mike has it right! Get back to being the killer, let the corners be the cover guys.

I think the hits will come, the question is when is Wade going to do for Roy what he is doing for Demarcus? Wade put a stop to offenses dictating what D was going to do, now he needs to reach in that brain of his and pull out the exact way to let the Beast known as RW loose. It can be done, if he needs inspiration he should check out the film of Bob Stoops use of Roy at Oklahoma.

Maybe the flood of corners is less about getting Roy off the field and more about letting him do what he does best.

Ive said it for a long time, Coaches are responsible to get players in position to best utilyze their skill sets in order to be successful.

As for the negativity Ive learned the futility of getting into an exchange of ideas here when the masses have decided that a good football player has become the baby to be thrown out with the bath water.

For examples see my exchanges regarding TNEW and Anthony Henry to name a couple over the last few years.

My opinion is if the Cowboys get Roy in the box, dont inhibit him with an overload of coverage responsibilities and let him do, what I imagine the drafted him to do (which is what he did at OU, disrupt and destroy opponents in their own backfield) he will produce turnovers and decisive hits adding even more destruction to opposing offenses. If they continue to play him as a free safety I believe we will watch the last few years of his career somewhere like Baltimore where they will let him use his skill set to sell out and be that disruptive force.

Sorry but the EXCUSES don't wash.

For the secondary 3-4 or 4-3 is not a big deal. SOme changes yes but not really that many. Roy has been stinking it up all 3 years.
He has very poor recognition skills= and apparently is either unwilling or unable to either study lots of film or get better at it.
Sloppy tackling= there is NO excuse for a 6 year veteran to still be doing it.
Now the only thing I will give him a PARTIAL pass on is the big hits. You do notice that any player that gets a lot of recognition for big hits starts to get penalties called on him. Typical NFL hyocrisy= they will advertise and use big hits for promoting the game- but they tend to go after the guys that do it.
Especially if he is wearing the star. Roy was aggressive- but I think all the penalties and other problems have made him tentative= and for him that is the worst possible situation.

He needs to lift but I hope he does a lot more. He must speed and agility train, work on burst besides leg lifts, squats, and yada, and STRETCH. You must stretch those large muscles to their fulless to increase not only strength over a now fuller range of motion (ROM), but to relatively increase the speed of contractions. His stride will lengthen but hopefully he will contract as fast (a relative increase in contraction due to the longer distance). If so he will get faster esp if the speed on contraction is actually faster than before. (He will take longer strides at a faster pace therefore he will run faster). Not to mention the decrease in injuries from stretching and the ability to rotate the torso and upper body, flex at the hips more easily and faster, and dorsiflex the torso in defending passes and hopefully interceptions as well. If he does really well he can also stretch the lumbricals and all the gluteal muscles, the sartorius, and importantly the psoas and adductor magnus. In other words he will be able to adjust his body of a wide range and move laterally much easier which means defending passes more easily.

He'll be more better. And he can do these things if he puts his mind to it and of course has a trainer teaching him what and how to do it. I would hope the trainers have him on some kind of programs like these. Does anyone know if the Dallas trainers get into all of the ancillary stuff?
