This group of safeties say that they will make you pay for any success at running or receiving!

From what I have always heard, Cowboys would only consider
drafting a safety in first round if he was considered a super blue chipper... (ala Derwin James)
I wanted James so badly.

Cowboys kissed a ton of frogs, really ugly frogs, at Safety but this group is great.

Kearse is what teams thought Isaiah Simmons would be, just took him a few years to figure it out. An almost positionless defender who can give you different looks from week to week. It's crazy that just before he came to Dallas, he was a partial starter for a very bad Lions team. He's had 29 starts the last two years. Before that, he only started 12 games in 5 years.

Hooker was always held back by injuries. He was an elite centerfielder, ball-hawking Safety at Ohio State who merited being selected 15th overall. It still baffles me that we didn't sign him the first time he visited and also that once signed, the team kept playing Damontae Kazee over him.

I loved Donovon Wilson at A&M. He played a Honey Badger role as the 5th DB for the Aggies and he was fearless. He kind of faded some (injuries) the last few years in college, but I was thrilled the Cowboys snagged him in the 6th round.

Israel Mukuamu is like gravy. I had him for a summer scouting assignment a few years ago and I was completely intrigued by someone his size, playing outside Cornerback. I also kept wondering who the heck #1 on the other side was because that guy was popping all over the film (Jaycee Horn). Mukuamu is another "positionless defender" who allows Dan Quinn to play Chess on defense, especially with all of these gazelle Tight Ends infiltrating the league.

Maybe that 2021 first year back on the field from an achilles tendon tear was about Hooker recovering and trying to return to play form.
I dunno if he ever fully regains that sensational range and mobility he once had when he entered the NFL, but no doubt he seems to have solidfied the deep middle

Kazee was awful and refused to tackle anyone. I would have played Hooker on a 1/2 healthy achilles over Kazee.

I could also see Overshown put on a few lbs and be a quick/reactive LB, since we are a little lighter there than at safety. I could see him at safety as well.
I thought Overshown was already a listed 230 lbs ... that's already one reason why I don't see him moving to safety.

If that was the case, then he'd be headed for a Jamal Adams type role where he is strictly a box safety. .

All I will say is we desperately need turnovers from the defense in the playoffs and possibly a defensive score if we’re ever to get over the divisional round hump.

Maybe I'm jumping the gun, but I cannot ever remember us having this quality of safety unit and depth since the Super bowl 90's dynasty
(Woodson, James Washington, Brock Marion, and Thomas Everett ) ... and since the duo pairing of Roy Williams/Darren Woodson.

- Wilson and Kearse could easily be Pro Bowl discussions at season's end, imo.
And many even thought Donovan was ballin' out so well, at one point that he was playing on a Pro bowl level last year.

- Admittedly I was shocked that Stephen Cap Boy Jones committed to re-signing Wilson, as it's widely speculated that Cowboys do not have big regards
for safety play. I thought Wilson would be a goner in FA..

- Malik Hooker has never been this healthy and durable during his NFL career - it had been a crippling fragile eggshell set back for him since his rookie year.
And now he has put together back to back durable seasons for us since he's been with the Cowboys .

- And keep an eye on 3rd year Israel Mukuamu - who may be flexed at both safety and CB. The coaches are apparently very high on him,
and if they let him mastered safety role, he could eventually take over Hookers' starting role.
I need to see what Hookers current contract status is of now, becuz i thought he'd be a FA next year... something that i think Kearse will be as well.

- Should Cowboys decide Not to re-sign Kearse (whose been a leader of the secondary) and he departs as a UFA.,who will be next to step in for Kearse ?
They have a ton of quality strong safety types, but still really don't have that elite centerfielder Free Safety. Hooker has been ok, but I think we all expected more of a playmaker when he signed if healthy. It is going to be interesting to see if Joseph can make an impact there.

It's a good group, I hope we can keep replenishing the talent, cause God we had some awful safety play before McCarthy got here. And yes I give him the credit because the way we been going about building the team since he's got here is totally opposite of the way things use to be done.

Me, I didn't think nor expected of hooker to be an elite playmaker because I frankly did not expect him to make it in the NFL anymore ...I thought his body was gone.

ACL. tears....Achilles tendon tears...and frankly NFL players usually don't fully recover from Achilles tears, ala Eric Berry...

That's why I tend to wonder if hooker no longer has that terrific range and movement skills when he entered NFL as a top 10 overall prospect.

But yet Malik doesn't give up big plays thru the deep middle, does not get caught out of position and let's plays get behind him like Kazee did.
He's also a much better, much more physical and reliable tackler than what Kazee was.

And we have safeties who are emerging as leaders in Kearse, hooker and donovan.
And who knows how Izzy will come out, providing he continues in his rotation role.

Safety is stacked, especially compared to the last decade of Cowboys football. I don't think Jeff Heath or JJ Wilcox would even make this 53.

Donovan Wilson especially was such a nice re-signing this offseason. He's a player that means more to the Cowboys than most other teams.

1) PFF has Wilson too low.
2) I see this as Kearse last season in DAL
3) Hooker needs a big year to stay in 2024.
4) Izzy or Bell will replace Kearse in '24
5) We have to find out what Bell can do.
6) Cowboys need a FS2: Coyle, KJ or NW.
7) I'd like to see Bell, Coyle or Thomas leap!
