How is the McClain thing calculated? I know they were supposed to get a credit for it, but I also read that since he was suspended the whole year that his contract rolled over to the next year or something. Anyone know exactly how that works?

We always spend most of our cap each year. We have little to carry over and Stephen assures us that
we will be bargain bin shoppers again this year. He and McClain believe in building a team through
the draft and only drafting mid to lower tier players to fill holes. The plan is pretty near fixed in stone now.

Likely means we get the $ when we cut him. He took home 2.175 mill in bonuses - I believe that the team is going to go after that

Why the heck are the browns and niners carrying over so much? I though there was some sort of floor?
The "floor" you are referring to was for years 2013-2016, if I'm not mistaken. We are just finishing 2016, obviously, so I'm not sure how they are carrying over so much. If a team didn't spend at least 89% of their available cap (that's the "floor") over those four years, then they have to give the NFLPA enough $$ to reach that floor. The NFLPA, in turn, distributes that cash among that teams players (not sure how they determine how much every player gets and I assume the players involved would include any player that played for that team in the previous 4 years). So, there really isn't a "penalty" for any team that didn't reach the floor other than they could have chosen to sign other players for more money than they actually ended up signing. I know this isn't much of an answer and I'm sure some of the members here with a lot more knowledge on the subject than me will chime in and provide more/better info.

I'm not sure if these are the official numbers.......it wasn't announced last year until Feb 25th

There should be some adjustments for McClain and McFadden and Gregory like you said
But there are also escalators and incentives that aren't known.......Sean Lee gets 2m for playing 80 % of snaps for instance.......there was also talk DAL has to pay back up to 4m they borrowed from the cap back in 2013

Do you have any insight on if McClains contract rolling over or was that just crap? I've never heard of it before so I wasn't sure whether it was true or not.

Over the Cap.com still has us over the 2017 Cap by 8.7million. We got some carving to do just to be
able to sign anyone.

McClain is technically still under contract since he was suspended for the year....DAL has his rights for 2018....but they also want to recover the full 2.1m he was charged against the 2016 salary cap

Adjustments to the cap will be made but he may not formally get released

Same with Gregroy......DAL has his rights for 3 more seasons AFTER next year

Most of that is planned
They get 30m from restructures to TSmith, TCrawford, TFrederick and Dez
They get 5 from a Free cut
Another 5m if they cut Morris, Hanna and Wilber

Then there is the 14m they can get from Romo
Money they can get from a Witten extension/paycut.....4m

That is 60m

So if that's true, Dallas will retain him to avoid a cap hit for cutting him and if he ever gets reinstated, then they will have to cut him? At that point they would still have the remainder of his current contract hit their cap next year right?

No the 2 aren't related...........they keep his rights because he was suspended and his contract tolled

They get the salary cap relief regardless....he even should have got fined for not appearing at camp, which would allow DAL to recover his entire 750k signing bonus in addition to getting the base salary back for being suspended

There would no cap hit for cutting him

So they retain his rights, but if they choose to release him, there's no future consequences to it then? Good to know thanks.

Thanks for information BK. What would be the ramifications of not restructuring Crawford, keeping Hanna, and Carr retiring; please do? Hanna has become frustrating, but is such a good blocker I wonder if he's worth keeping around. This D needs some help and would just go with Collins @ 3tech (same if not better production). Thanks in advance, would take me a year to figure that out; respect.

We save 5m by restructuring TCrawford, so if not his cap hit is 10m
cutting TCrawford is not really viable this year.....it would only save 50k... I personally think he is picked on too much and gets the most consistent pressures on the team...he has the size for run down SDEs and can play the 3T as well

We save 1.5m by cutting Hanna instead of his 3m cap hit
Hanna just had another knee surgery so he is probably done......Witten, Swaim and Gathers may be our TEs

Carr is a FA but has 2.7m in dead money because his contract had voidable years

Appreciate the info and can see your point with Crawford (wish he was just more in that 5M/yr range in general) but have plenty of DL problems to begin with so no need to cut the talent we do have, etc. But 10M is a big hit to take on only to cut him next year so see why he would be restructured. Shamefully forgot about Swaim tbh in initial question. Great news on Carr:DThanks again
