2018 - $18,695,415

2019 - $70,852,689

2020 - $141,647,617

It's a shame that Dak only has 2 years left on his rookie contract we really can't take advantage of that until 2019. One of the main reasons why I have been advocating to trade up for Josh Rosen is to take advantage of the upcoming salary cap space. Having Rosen on a 5 year cheap rookie contract would allow the Cowboys to stack the deck in other areas.

I don't think his contract would be as cheap as you think and we'd have to give up the farm to move up for him.

If Dak plays well enough that he even gets a 2nd contract I don’t really think it matters

The problem with QB contracts is that whoever is the most recent good free agent QB will be the highest paid. Matthew Stafford signed a 5 year, $135,000,000 contract with the Detroit Lions, including a $50,000,000 signing bonus, $92,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $27,000,000. Dak playing well enough isn't enough to warrant a contract that will probably be even more lucrative than that due to inflation. Dak's ceiling is to become an Alex Smith caliber QB. He can be an effective and efficient game manager when he has the pieces around him. However, he can't put a team on his back when adversity strikes(Tyron Smith injury and Zeke suspension). If you pay a QB that much money he has to be able to overcome roster deficiencies. Having a good rookie QB on 5 year deal would allow us to build a juggernaut during that 5 year period.

I was very serious about trading up for Wentz or Goff. I am also serious about trading up for Rosen but Dak's value may be too low right now for him to be an attractive trade asset.

My theory on the salary cap remains the same. The big bucks go to QB, OLINE, DLINE. outside of that you wheel and deal with the other positions.
Example
WR - Dez making 12 million,
Solution is a pay cut or trade
DT - Crawford making 9million
Solution is get a mammoth NT to start next to him, allow him to simply disrupt.

Some people are extremely high on Dak. We as fans might not be as high on him right now, but I'm sure there are some GM's in the NFL that would give up SIGNIFICANT picks to get him.

vs.

Jared Goff signed a 4 year, $27,937,673 contract with the Los Angeles Rams, including a $18,518,308 signing bonus, $27,487,673 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $6,984,418.(previous 1st overall pick)

Myles Garrett signed a 4 year, $30,412,255 contract with the Cleveland Browns, including a $20,258,004 signing bonus, $30,412,255 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $7,603,064.(most recent 1st overall pick).

What we would have to give up to move up depends on how much the Browns value Dak.

No way would I give up the farm, which is what it would take, to move up to pick Rosen, Darnold or any of this year's QBs, particularly one from a southern California school (when was the last time a QB from a southern CA school justified that high a pick). Yes, it appears to have worked for Philly, but the NFL is littered with high pick QBs that flamed out miserably. Now, if the Cowboys implode next year and end up picking in the top 5 because of it, then, yeah, I'd be more open to that depending on how Dak plays in part because the cost would be less.

two out to five NFL personnel executives chose Dak over Wentz and Goff in September.

It's really hard to say what his value is right now. Would Dak + 19th overall pick be enough for the 1st overall pick? Most fans on this forum would say no but it's hard to know for sure what the professionals think.

What did Chicago do with Trubisky? Nothing the first year. Second year doesn't look promising to me. Goff was garbage his first year. I would say Goff was better his second year but most of that was due to Gurley and not Goff. Wentz was pretty good his first year but got injured. Wentz was on fire his second year but tore his ACL. Who knows how good Wentz will be next year. I doubt he scrambles as much. Watson was on fire also but tore his ACL. So, who knows what he will be like next year. Will Wentz and Watson become pocket passers? So many variables.

I don't get what people see in Rosen or Darnold.

Offering Dak as a trade chip to move up for a QB is telling the other team "he's not good enough", so unless they're a bunch of morons YOU lowered his trade value.

Not that the draft value chart is gospel, but moving up from 19 to 1 - which is where we'd need to go to make sure we get Rosen with NYG at 2 - would be extremely costly. I'm not sold on Rosen, and even if I was I'd be reluctant to pay that steep price given Dak really isn't the worst QB in the NFL despite what guys like you think. For every Wentz or Goff taken that high there's a Ryan Leaf or Tim Couch. Dak has shown enough to get another year before making a long term decision about him. Add some assets around him.

We were selecting in the 4 spot not 19. I think Dallas loved either QB but got jumped. Moving from 19 to the top spot would require a lot of picks and players.
