Cowboys Scout "QB Interest Is Sincere"

Personally, I'd have no problem if Cam was the pick.

4 to 5 years from now when he's ready to take over, he'd be a mix between Ben and Vick. Great QB.

Problem I would have though is how he reacts to sitting on the bench for 5 years. He has a bad attitude and probably cause some beef.

I would rather find our future now then the year we suck, though. (the draft following Romos retirement).

If you spend a top 10 pick on a QB, you're not sitting him on the bench for 4-5 years. He needs to be starting by year 2. So if they take Newton, then they would likely need to move Romo within the next 2 years.

Yes you do, if he is as raw as Newton. You can afford to take that risk if the potential reward is a top tier NFL QB

I know that the Cowboys have expressed some interest in a QB but he's not a first rounder. People who know me will know the QB I know.

Wouldn't surprise me if Kitna is on the market if the CBA is signed and certain teams get the rookie QB they wanted so they're looking for the stopgap QB to cover the learning curve.

if what your friend told you is the legit mindset of the franchise, then, to me, this is a subtle shot at Tony Romo and the Cowboys are looking at the Chargers/A.J. Smith gameplan of years past when they drafted Philip Rivers while still having Drew Breese on the roster.

The situations are similar. Brees was the established young vet, just 27 years old when he left as a FA, but he was considered " brittle ", and they had the #1 pick of the draft with a class that had Eli Manning and Philip Rivers on it. Tony has missed some time due to injuries in his short career as a starter and last year's fiasco really, really, really, REALLY hurt Jerry Jones very deeply, so he might have gone into this off-season with the " do not leave any stone unturned " mindset. If that's the case ( and I'll admit I'm probably looking waayy too much into your friend's message ) then I think it's a HUGE mistake.

To begin with, NONE of this QBs are anywhere near the level that Philip Rivers was when he came out of NCst. I don't care how good Newton looks in a uniform or how foolish he made college defensive players look last year, including some who will be drafted very high this year and next year, he's still no Philip Rivers or Eli Manning for that matter.

Then there's the Tony Romo factor. I may have been hidding under a rock or was as naive as a 1 day old baby, but never, ever, did I heard Jerry Jones, or anybody from the Dallas Cowboys organization, say that they were looking for franchise QBs during the Troy Aikman years. Even when he was in obvious decline. Perhaps they took that as a painful lesson and made a pledge as a franchise never to go through the empty years between Troy and Tony again, ever, but, still, that's a very, very thin, blury and dangerous line they're approaching. On one hand, they can't be gushing about Tony being the franchise QB for years to come then with the other hand, looking for " franchise QB to take the franchise into the future ". That's when and how an organization starts to crumble, slowly, from the inside out.

Again, I'm most probably looking waaaayyy too much into what your friend is saying and I should just look at it for what it is, but if by some small chance I'm within distance of reality with this, I don't like it.

No, you don't. There hasn't been ANY good QB in the history of the NFL who was drafted in the 1st round and waited 5 years in the bench to start. Hell, I'll venture to say there hasn't been any, wether good OR bad..

You make some really good points. It makes you wonder.

I agree with this philosophy as well... IF Newton is there at 9, Dallas will not pass on him. Remember the whole Randy Moss fiasco is still fresh in Jerry Jones mind. People act as though Romo is a "young" QB, the guy will be 31 in April.

Elway discussses Newton's adjustment to playing in NFL

10 hours ago by AdamCaplan
Cam Newton, like most spread offense quarterbacks, will have an adjustment to learning a pro style offensive scheme in the NFL.

"There is no question. It is an adjustment when you are watching film and then all of the sudden, you see 11 guys look to the sideline because they are calling the audibles from the sideline," Denver Broncos executive director of football operations John Elway said. "That is an adjustment--when you see that, you know it is going to be somewhat of an adjustment coming to the NFL, because the coach is not going to be able to call the audibles from the sideline. "

Newton only had one year of starting experience at Auburn University and it was in a spread scheme.

"I think that is a concern--I think (the spread) is a great offense, especially for college. If you look at it and if I were a college coach, that is probably what I would be doing too--especially when you have the athletes, like a Cam Newton, that are back there running it. The thing is, you want them back there not thinking and just playing athletically because they are so good at that. I think that there is no question, that is a big adjustment," Elway added.

out one simple reality that shows the absurdity of drafting a QB in the 1st round and then waiting 4 or 5 years to develop:

Best realistic case scenario, Newton/Gabbert is ready to start by his 4th year and you throw away a 35 years old Tony Romo who'll probably be well on his way to the HOF, possibly have won a 'chip or two, while still having plenty left:

now what ?

The Cowboys would be going into that season with a QB who doesn't have much NFL regular season experience, if any, will be making his first start at the ripe age of 27 years old, and the following year AFTER that, is going to put them in a position to give him either a franchise player type contract OR tag him and pay him a franchise player type salary. :abuseme:

There's a reason why teams like the Saint, Colts, and Patriots, all who have older QBs than the Cowboys, don't even entertain drafting ANY quarterback in the first round.

And exactly what did the Chargers get for losing a 26 years old Brees, after franchising him twice ( if I remember correctly ), again ?

We have an interest in Newton/Gabbert just like we had an interest in Rodgers, Tebow, Brady Quinn, and J.P. Losman.

Not going to happen.

I would agree with you with the exception of Tebow. Remember Jerry`s bar comments when asked about Tebow ?

The way Mallett's throwing I'm getting concerned that if he's there in the 2nd Jerry may pull the trigger. Hopefully a team with QB need trades to the bottom of the 1st to get him (and it's not us).

I would be ready to take Mallett in the second. He is a risk , but the guy could get his head on right and become the next Manning. He has elite talent.

You mean the next Ryan Leaf? The parallels are off the charts.

I would freakin puke. This guy is Ryan Leaf. No way would I go after a guy like Mallett with anything higher than a 5th round pick. In fact I'm not sure that I wouldn't take him off my draft board completely. He's got the biggest bust potential of anyone in this draft.

Dallas has had enough idiots on the roster in the recent past. It was expensive enough to purge those turds. No need to re-load.

Gosh I hope not.............jerry loves his alumni school arkansas so I could envision this being a reality

There is no doubt that Mallett has talent . He has the best arm in this year`s draft class. He does have a huge bust potential , but he also has as much upside as any QB coming out. I`m not going to judge him on the unfound rumors floating around . The Cowboys staff will have to do their research on that. I wouldn`t like the pick but I would understand it if the character concerns are addressed.
