Cowboys Scout "QB Interest Is Sincere"

Gosh I hope not.............jerry loves his alumni school arkansas so I could envision this being a reality

Why do people keep perpetuating this myth that simply isn't true?

We have taken exactly one Arkansas player during Jerry Jones' tenure as GM.

my guess is they want a team that needs a QB to trade in front of us(thinking we want a QB) to take one pushing other players down to us

I've gotta agree. Jerry's blowing smoke.

I'm pretty sure a lot of us covered this point a month ago. You'd better be darn sure Romo is definitely your guy if you have the 9th pick in the draft and a stud QB presents itself somewhere around when it's time for you to draft.

I think a QB makes or breaks a team, but if Romo is definitely your man, you entertain all offers and possible pick up some huge picks and move down a bit.

My opinion doesn't count, but if you're going to keep Romo, then the Offensive line is top priority.

I wouldnt touch any QB in this draft until late Round 2, much less #9.

Newton has a long ways to go until he's stepping onto a football field as a starter after transitioning from a one read spread college offense. His offensive coordinator at Auburn came out and admitted they only ran 10 base plays in their playbook. He's facing a Herculian sized jump to the NFL ... maturity wise, complexity wise, fundamentals wise. Some QB desperate team is going to draft him way too early, throw him out way too soon and ruin him.

Gabbert ... Football Outsiders did a study to find common traits of college QBs who succeed in the NFL. The two traits that stood out are they typically started 3 or 4 years in college and played through their Senior Years, and high accuracy and completion percentages. Gabbert doesn't fall under either category.

Mallet .. What do you get when you mix Ryan Leaf and Matt Jones?

Ponder ... I think he might could be a decent mid-range starter. But if you're looking to get rid of Tony Romo because he can't lift his teammates to a Superbowl level, how do you grade Ponder when he coudn't even get FSU to mediocre levels.

Locker ... he would be horrible in any Norv, timing based system that required accuracy. Maybe if you were running some Shanny system of stretch plays and bookleg heaves.

Newton is NOT an NFL QB. I don't want a running QB. I don't want a Vince Young or Michael Vick for a QB. I want a pocket passer QB that has the mobility to get out of a jam. (like Romo)

If your QB is running, he is at SERIOUS risk. That risk is your franchise's risk since QB IS the most important position.

The biggest weakness in Cam Newton's game is his passing skills and technique which will only set him up to to run more or throw lots of picks.

I would pass on Cam Newton and not even think twice about it.

I had a chance to speak to one of the Cowboys scouts regarding the reported interest in the top 2 QB's in this class.

He was very adamant that the Cowboys all agree from the top down that with the opportunity they are presented this year that they have to take advantage of the situation not only going into this year but 10-15 years down the road.

He said, "you dont want to wait till your a poor team and need a QB before your in the position of taking one"

He made clear everything they are doing in an effort to decide if either of these guys are the type of franchise QB's that can take you into the future. He questioned to why in the world would you risk passing on that guy at any point.

He stated to the man the Cowboys know they blew it last year but it presents them with a unique opportunity right now.

I attempted to put him on the spot, I expected him to scoot the issue. I asked him straight up, could either of these guys be the pick at #9.

He fired right back, "once the process is complete, if we feel either of these guys can be the face of the Dallas Cowboys and take this team into the next decade we wont hesitate. This is not a game for us, we are not putting on a poker face. We are looking for a franchise QB. We look for a franchise QB every year. We have not been presented with this kind of opportunity sinse 2003. We must take advantage of it"

Newton and .... Gabbert or Locker?

I agree...and if one of these QB's is that good, then they aren't making it to pick #9.

What was the name of that QB that just won a Super Bowl a few weeks ago? San Francisco was choosing between Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers. They made the wrong choice and Rodgers fell all the way to GB at 24. It happens.

I don't think Rodgers is the QB he is today if he had went to the 49ers first overall. I think Rodgers sitting behind Favre all those years helped him a lot. Plus he wasn't thrown into the fire in his rookie year.

Because myths about Jerry are interesting copy.

If you spend a top 10 pick on a QB, you're not sitting him on the bench for 4-5 years. He needs to be starting by year 2. So if they take Newton, then they would likely need to move Romo within the next 2 years.

Having him sit for 5 years would be an extreme. But Green Bay had Aaron Rogers sit on the bench for 3 years before taking over for Brett Farve, and Steve McNair sat on the bench in Tennessee for 2 years before taking the starting job.

If the Scouts believe that their is a franchise QB in the draft, and that QB makes it to #9, there is nothing unreasonable about drafting him. Romo's contact will be up in 2013, at which time he will be 33. Are you positive that Romo will still be worth the type of money that would be required to keep him and the years required to keep him, at the age of 33?
