Cowboys secondary #1 in NFL per PFF

Hard to tell. If you just look at yards, our run defense was best in the league and our pass defense was one of the worst. But if you let your eyes do the test, I can't think of a year when I thought so many of our DBs played well. How can we be having career years from so many guys yet we're still worse than we were when they were having their worst years? Make no sense.

As much as I'd like nothing better than to swallow that PFF rating, I'll take it with a grain of salt. I think they're rating Mo on what he did previous to his groin injury and Carr's rating seems overstated, based upon it being for his number of starts. They may be OK but #1? That's pushing it, folks.
Yup, I never took PFF's rankings very seriously, and in this case #1 does seem pretty far-fetched... however, if our secondary is even 50% as good as what they are claiming, that's still better than what I would have expected.

Right, so I suppose if you looked at each guy in our secondary individually, it may look like a very good group on paper. And maybe that's where this ranking is coming from. However as a collective group, in practice, I don't know if #1 is exactly right. But still, nice to think that someone is giving our secondary props.

And yet we finished 26th in the league in yards given up via the pass with 4167 yards.

Hmmm...me thinks PFF is full of something.

I have no proof of this but looking back at this season I don't recall like in past years receivers going off on us. I think I read a stat that we are worst in the league at defending tight ends? It seems like running backs and tight ends did the damage in the passing game against us. I don't think the secondary was the one getting torched.

I agree. It shocked me to see how low we ranked in passing yards giving up.

Bend don't break will allow yards all day. Teams were just settling for 3 instead of 7 most of the time in the red zone, and then turnovers and sacks came in bunches late
This, along with the fact they reference individual grades makes me think it must be an aggregate of scores or something considering how little the entire unit played together

yet ironically DBs (S and CB) will be two of our biggest offseason needs

I'd priortize linebacker and pass rusher over any of the DB's.
Lee Smith Wilson lineup next year should keep linebacker from being a priority. But depth to go along with Hitchens & Nzeocha - maybe replace guys like Gachkar, Durant, and Wilber with a mid to late linebacker I could see.

They have only had a couple of 100 yard wide receivers vs them. Antonio Brown got over 50 of his yards on the last 2 plays when Dallas didn't cover him and dropped 40 yards down field. D. Jackson went over 100 yards because of a missed assignment by Brown. Other than that their defense has been good vs WRs, even playing a bend type system.

This site has Dallas ranked 6th vs WRs

Wow. What a bunch of malarkey. LOL

They're OK, but they are a long, long way from being best in the NFL.

4167 yards allowed isn't all that great considering how little time the defense is on the field relative to other defense.

Ultimately the sum is better than parts and I've been utterly and pleasantly surprised at the Cowboys pass defense performance this season -- stats be damned.
If you arent going to shut people down, then you have to get key stops. They have been good at that this year.

Also they give up yards, but they havent allowed teams to move at will and dictate the game

Claiborne, Church, Wilcox are free agents.

Yep that was my point.
And I said amongst the biggest needs obviously pass rusher is #1. We could go up there also depending on what happens with our FAs

Brown develops into a very good LCB or RCB and we add another functional CB then I think we have a very good secondary. Right now I would say we are middling

And to be more consise, what I mean by functional CB is play like we got from Brown this year. A player who can put on the field anywhere and not vena liability

The problem some have here is we see every catch someone makes against the Cowboys, and people overreact as though it never happens to anyone else. The rules favor passing. Good QBs are going to complete passes.

"Cut that guy!"

Fine, who is replacing him?

"Anybody would be better!"

Couple things here:

1) That's not all on the secondary by ANY means. Our DLine was in flux for most of the season and didn't give the DB's a lot of help. Rod's coverage keeps everything underneath. We don't get beat over the top too darn much

2) Look at those numbers once Irving and Mayowa came on. Now we're fully healthy and can get a great rotation going that will keep guys fresh. Can't wait.

I have to wonder how many of those were garbage time yards where we allowed them to catch passed over the middle and so on.
