There's currently a good deal of flux in the Cowboys' defensive line outlook for the 2025 season. But the team has made a move toward solidifying at least the back end of the rotation for the upcoming season.

The Cowboys have secured defensive end Tyrus Wheat on a one-year deal, part of a trio of exclusive rights free agents signings made official this week. Offensive lineman Brock Hoffman finalized his tender on Tuesday, while safety Juanyeh Thomas and Wheat were inked on Wednesday.

Wheat came to Dallas as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State in 2023. He saw action in 12 games as a rookie but played the vast majority of his snaps with the special teams unit. In 2024, he made it onto the field in eight contests, primarily as an edge rusher helping to take up the slack caused by teammates' injuries.

For those wondering, exclusive rights free agent deals are one year, $1.03 million contracts. Wheat, Hoffman, and Thomas are currently not counting against the cap because of the "top 51" rule but that changes at the official start of free agency next week.

Regardless, keeping all three ERFA's at a combined cost of $3 million is a bargain these days.

This changes everything.
Yep, another decent defensive end returns and of value. Another hole filled. Valid unless crying adds up values.

Sam Williams, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Marshawn Kneeland back in positional group would bring a lot back up for the defensive line.

Jerry won a negotiation, when the player had no other option, as a restricted player.

Naw, that is still developed talent along a plan to maximize. Ask that player if he is committed.

He better be if he chooses to have a career.

This still roster building and solid depth. When I first enlisted, I was expecting to be forged in fire and next General.

Our VA is being fired. You justifying that as well?

What re-signing Odighizuwa means is there is a more defined need to be addressed and a more specific type of DT to target. Playing the 3-tech spot, Odighizuwa is often tasked with shooting the B-gap and avoiding blockers rather than taking them on. The 1-tech spot next to him is in many ways the polar opposite, demanding blocker occupation, absorption and shedding, and generally hold ground as to clog rushing lanes and protect the crashing linebackers. The Cowboys have had a tough time filling this 1-tech role throughout Odighizuwa’s time in Dallas and it’s shown on the field.

Based on draft boards right now, Kenneth Grant is probably the only viable option at 1-tech for the Cowboys in the first round. More options will likely be available in the second and third rounds, but even in a deep draft such as this, the longer the Cowboys wait to address the position, the less likely the player they select will be able to step into a starting role right away.

Roster building involves solid depth. This is still building solid depth.

I don't believe in firing veterans and doing away with eggs. Then charge money for privilege to participate.

You have good ears. Understand English, and aren't entitled to ignore real accountability, After that, take up quarter tossing and playing in the street with your 'boys,'

You are lost, like the previous ten seasons, and fine and happy.

I'm just a fan, but loyal don't a minute depend upon you or your support.

All I have to do is be honest. you only have to have advantage on topic.

Now, I didn't stutter and your ears don't overlap.

Lead us all again on real development of this very roster!

No 30 calendars...just football. Gold digging without shame.

Understand English?

Carl Lawson: A more reasonable financial keep, Lawson effectively re-established himself as one of the better pass rushers in the NFL last season. With that mission accomplished, it's a no-brainer to consider keeping him in Dallas and especially if Lawrence walks, because the EDGE position is currently in far too much flux as Schottenheimer and Eberflus try to get things settled going forward. Lawson's impact was felt time and again in 2024, and he'd cost one-third of Lawrence, though the added value of Lawrence as a run stopper and locker room leader exceeds Lawson's role; but, ideally, keeping both would be nice.

Reasonable depth and experience.
