Cowboys keep a bunch of players mysteriously for no apparent reason. Three at the top of my head are Matt Johnson, street, and Hayden the golden cock

This is in reference to Jackson and not Rico. I'm rooting for Rico but still cautious

Hayden was hated but he was a starter. And Cowboys thought highly enough of Johnson to keep bringing him back. Cowboys are not any more mysterious than any team, or company, that see potential in their people.

The Cowboys took former Baylor basketball player Rico Gathers in the sixth round of last year’s draft even though he hadn’t played football in college, or even in high school. And even though Gathers never got on the field as a rookie, they think that gamble is going to pay off.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett says a year on the practice squad did Gathers a world of good, and he now appears to be ready to play tight end in the NFL.

“You think about where he was, coming from last year,” Garrett said, via the Star-Telegram. “He hadn’t played football since junior high, and he had done a really good job working out, trying to understand and get better at the fundamentals of the game away from here, but once he got here, it’s a different story. He came to work every day, and you saw him get better. He’s a very different player in all ways. He’s grown up in a lot of different ways that will help him become a better player this year.”

I love what it says at the end. "If Smith and Gathers are able to live up to their promise, that Cowboys 2016 draft class could be legendary."

And that's not even mentioning Charles Tapper.

I seem to remember another talented basketball player that did pretty good in the NFL...Tony Gonzalez. He was a terrible blocker when he started out, but learned.

lol, and when they cut him. So much for that so called talent.

Again, they retained him on 53 for much of season. Then again you didn't even know that much but still giving your 2 cents anyway.

Cowboys also cut Todd Christiansen, Brian Waters and Jimmy Smith. What exactly was your point again?

Again they also cut him. My 2 cents are more than yours.

There are more than a few teams who have tried the basketball player to TE thing. Both KC and Indianapolis have their own versions in Demetrius Harris and Tyrone Swoopes.

This is not a new thing we are attempting. Judging by the progress by the other two, that is what you can expect with Gathers.

The first one I remember is Morris Stroud, a 6'10" TE for the Chiefs in the 70s. Hank Stram originally just used him to block FGs, but he ended up playing six seasons.

As for Gathers, I knew the Cowboys were pleased with his progress when they ignored the TE position in the draft this year.

With all this arrogant talk, I'm wondering who will get in the HOF first, Rico or Jaylon.
It all depends on how long they play. I'd go with Jaylon first, since TEs tend to have longer careers. Tack on 5 years for the obligatory wait, then there ya have it.

What were they supposed to do with Matt Moore? Tony Romo was the starter and was still rather inexperienced at the time. They needed a veteran backup who could be prepared with little reps. They couldn't keep 3 QBs on the roster. There was nothing cute about it. It was their only move.
Not about the move about the regret they had once he was gone. They lamented his being a panther and then dolphin that whole season with Weeden, Kassel, and Kellen Moore providing veteran backup experience.

I bet Jackson is cut by the Browns after training camp. People make a big deal over losing a 6th round pick who showed nothing in preseason.
But he flashed in that seahawk game I believe! In fact I was sitting in a sports bar with an old t.v. sports announcer( who had called some games on t.v. with none other than Troy Aikman in the broadcast booth with him) Jim ' somebody' think last name started with a "B" I talked about it within probably my first 100 posts!
Anyway, I ask him who that D. Jackson's stutter/ flutter step reminded him of and BOOM! that dude said Tony Dorsett! quick as a lightning strike,,, I'm like "" yeah! That's exactly who it reminds you of",,,,

Tony was in a very different situation than Gathers. Gonzalez was an all-american tight end in college. Gathers didn't play college football or even high school foootball.

I doubt it. Had the Cowboys been able to retain Moore back in 2007 the odds of him still being with Dallas in 2015 would have been slim.
