C'mon guys. When big names like Laverneus Coles, Zach Thomas, etc. are hitting the open market, let's think of how we got really bad from 1998-2002. Older players are not what we should be loooking for. Continue building through the draft, and looking for acquiring younger, healthier players through GOOD trades and free agency is the way to go! We are in good cap shape, and need only look at Dan Snyder to see how NOT to build a team.

You know what we should do?

We should get better players, and if they happen to be older (and won't require a large salary), so be it. Forgive me if I'd like to sacrifice our youthful image to win games.

Well that leaves RW or Fitz then...

well put. fact is we only have a handful of players who have EVER won a playoff game. some older players with expierence at winning playoff games could help.

I agree, bring in the youth. one of the oldest players we should be looking at is LB Thomas Howard (Oakland) who's going into his 3rd season :)

How many playoff games have Coles and Thomas played in or was on a team that won a playoff game? Just curious...

Absolutely. When did you turn into a genius, Rath?
Going older is a road to norwheresville. To cap city blues. To a dead-end.
Let's keep it young, skilled and ascending, not descending.

And let's get out of this mode of thinking that when a team dumps a "big name" we should rush out to get that player. There is usually a very good reason a team would get or want to rid "talent" like Zach or Laverneus.

So let's steer clear of problems-- financial, cap or persona -- who have minimal time left in their careers.

It's quite alright to bring experienced vets on the team. The Pats have been extremely successful in doing so. Just don't sign them to big contracts that you can't get out of w/o taking a big cap hit, especially if they get injured.

Back around '99 or so, Snyder signed aging vets and it backfired upon him. But in the past 4 years he's signed young, high valued FA's...and that still backfired upon them. You can still build your roster thru the draft while adding some aging FA's and be quite alright.

I wouldn't mind Zach Thomas at all for a moderate 3 year deal. Something like $5 million guaranteed wouldn't be that bad as long as he's cleared medically.

I'd rather go after a guy like Coles, he's only 30 years old... I believe he would be an outstanding #2 WR opposite of T.O.

I really don't care to get much older. A few players here and there but apparently if some people on these boards had it their way we'd be full of guys 31+ and in 2 years we'd be in serious trouble, again, trying to rebuild after all these old people dropped off.

Am I the only one who realizes that we AREN'T in a rebuilding mode, and are trying to build a team that can win the superbowl next year and probably the next too

Yea, we shouldn't stock our team with old players, but bringing in one or two that would be upgrades is a good thing. Why wouldn't it be?

Would you rather us win a superbowl next year or in 3-4 years? Signing two or three players that would be a bit older doesn't screw over the future either (Specially if they don't have a high salary) or am I missing something?

Most of the stars on our team are pretty young if you noticed. I think we are safe for a few years

I'd like to sign a few vets, if we get them cheap:

Keith Brooking LB-need some depth and experience
Donte Stallworth WR- deep threat
Mewelde Moore RB-solid, good kick returns
Drayton Florence CB-depth

I'd pass on Thomas, Coles and Law.
Samuels, Briggs, Haynesworth, Trufant, Berrian and Turner will be too expensive.
