Cowboys Show How A New Stadium Can Be A Huge Money-Maker For NFL Teams

The Dallas Cowboys saw a huge increase in revenue in 2009, growing from $280 million to $420 million in a single year according to Forbes.com. That was the year the Cowboys' new stadium opened showing that a new stadium can be a big boom to an NFL team's bottom line.

One benefit to a new stadium is the ability to sell "personal seat licenses." The Cowboys charged fans up to $150,000 for these licenses which give fans first dibs on buying season tickets each year.

If Jerry Jones the Cowboys owner were as smart as Jerry Jones the Business and Marketing guru, we would have won 20 Super Bowls by now.:D

Yup. Really is stupid in my eyes

I hate them too, but it's only stupid to us. For the teams, it's another avenue for revenue. The NFL teams don't care they they are pushing true fans out in favor of corporations or wealthy individuals. For the NFL, they have their cake (the fans) and get to eat it too. (PSL licensing) Let's face it. They aren't losing fans because of it. If they lose anyone it would be very few. A number so small that they PSL licenses would more than make up for the loss.

At that level of personal finance - it's a tax write off for some and a business entertainment option for others. And for some, they have the disposable income to follow their favorite team like we would all do. Most likely though, those people are older and less inclined to scream and yell like we all did (or do) in our 20's and 30's.

It's just the way it is.

I love the cowboys, but it is just so hard for me to invest in them for the same cost as a reasonable sized house for what equates to about 40 hours of entertainment a week.

That said, I don't have that much capital - maybe if I did and this was a blip I would change my mind, but even then I'd like to think I would just spring for individual games than all of them.

The NFL I think has a big problem on their hands in that many of the home stadiums are becoming more like away stadiums and those that are not are seeing their fanbase less enthusiastic.

We've seen this with Cowboys games all year long. At Cowboys Stadium, the opposing team's fans fill the stadium. But at away games, Cowboys fans fill the stadium.

I watched the Pittsburgh vs. Tampa game this year, at Heinz Field, in a close game that was exciting and Tampa squeaked by with a win, at the Steelers crowd was dead for most of the game. Or the Cincy vs. Carolina game which ended in a tie, and the crowd was completely dead throughout the overtime.

Where the brilliance in Jerry's stadium plan lies is that he said before he built the stadium that they needed to create the videoboard because he felt with the quality of HD television, the TV watching experience was so great that stadiums would have to compete with that in the future. And he was right and it gave all fans, be it Cowboys or opposing teams fans, a reason to want to go to Cowboys Stadium.

Typically, I would be critical of an organization that is facing a similar problem that the NFL is facing. But, I am not sure what the NFL can do. The only teams I think that are immune to this are in god awful cities like Buffalo, where no opposing team's fans want to make a trip to go see a game.
