My first attempt at a mock draft only using players that we know the Cowboys have shown interest in (i.e., worked out, coming into Valley Ranch, talked extensively to, etc.).
Obviously, we don't know each player the Cowboys have shown interest in thus far, but the names below are players I think most of us will recognize as the Cowboys having shown interest in.
Finally, one conclusion that I reached while working on this Mock is that post-Draft, we will have to pick up 1-2 released vets (most likely) to complete the roster. This isn't anything new, of course.
Round 1.
Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake Forest
It was chosing between OO at DE and Kevin Johnson at CB, and I decided to go with K Johnson for two main reasons, (1) No serious medical issues, and (2) I don't see B Carr or Mo Claiborne on the team in 2016. As for 2015, between Scandy, Carr and K Johnson, we would have 3 good CBs. If we include Patmon and the pick-up from the Saints, we may actually have "decent" 4th and 5th CBs as well.
I have to admit, it was difficult choosing between OO and K Johnson. I wouldn't be upset with either of them in Round 1.
Round 2.
Mario Edwards Jr, DE, Florida State
I was choosing between Mario Edwards and D Randall, the Safety out of Arizona State. I went with Mario Edwards due to his versatility on the DL. He can play DE on base downs, and on passing downs, he can play 3-tech as well. This is, in fact, what the Cowboys told Mario Edwards when they spoke to him. Also, it saves the team having to draft a DE and also draft a DT. I think he would be good in a rotation along the DL. He's got good strength already, but he clearly needs work on his pass rush moves.
Preston Smith would be a better option, and the Cowboys have shown interest in him as well. However, I do not see P Smith lasting to our Round 2 pick, unfortunately.
I mentioned above that the Cowboys may have to pick up some vets post-Draft to fill out the roster. I think if the Draft plays out this way, Safety may be one of those positions.
Round 3.
Mike Davis, RB, South Carolina
J Garrett has been talking quite a bit about getting the "dirty" yards since Murry's departure. I think Davis can get those yards. He is a compact, physical, thickly built RB who will run between the tackles. And he's not a plodder either (as evidenced by his recent Pro Day). I think his style would nicely complement Randall, DMac, and Dunbar. Sitting here today, Davis is a guy I would feel more comfortable giving the football to on 3rd down and 1, for example, than several of the other RBs in this Draft.
The Cowboys recently attended Davis' Pro Day and had the staff put in specific drills for Davis to run.
By the way, have the Cowboys shown interest in Yeldon at RB? I think he would also fit the scheme.
Round 4.
Chris Conley, WR, Georgia
He has the size the Cowboys like, good hands, great character, and runs around a 4.35 40 yard dash. I think the Cowboys would like a WR who can take the top off a defense. Conley would once again nicely complement the skill set of the WRs already on the roster by drafting a WR with sub 4.4 speed (and who is 6' 2" and weighs around 213 lbs given the Cowboys tend to prefer length and size at the WR spot). Green Bay seems to find quality WRs around Round 3/4 area, and I think we would do the same with Conley. I am glad the Cowboys have shown interest in him. If you have time, youtube his highlights and read a couple articles on him. He is a very well-spoken, determined young man with strong leadership qualities.
Round 5.
J Poutasi, OG, Utah
Just a hunch here, but last year the Cowboys were quite keen on trying to get back into the 3rd round to pick up the OG from LSU. I think the Cowboys want a guy to push Leary, and at the very least, provide quality and cheap depth. A quality OG will also enable the Cowboys to move on from Berny in 2016 (save some money to extend Hardy, etc). Plus, if they can land a potential starter at OG, in an emergency, in case Z Martin needs to move to RT for a game or two (if Free is injured, for example), the Cowboys have a guy who can step in at OG. At least it gives the team some practical options for this year and next (as Leary becomes a RFA).
Round 7a.
Laurance Gibson, OT, Virginia Tech
Very good athleticism and length, needs to refine his skills. The coaching staff's new OT project. We need depth, and if Gibson shows the ability, maybe in about 3 years he can try to claim the RT spot? Between now and then, he needs to go on Parnell's learning curve when the Cowboys plucked him from NO's practice squad.
Round 7b.
Tray Walker, CB/FS, Texas Southern
The Cowboys need depth and competition at the CB and Safety spot. We take a flyer on a smaller school prospect with potential. You do that later in the Draft, like Round 7!
