Cowboys Sign Former Browns DT Perrion Winfrey

I'm surprised Justin Rogers didn't make it to training camp.

He must have been pretty disappointing last week.
I was kinda more excited to see Rogers in his second year than I was Taio.

I will say, I do remember Winfrey from the Senior Bowl. He was absolutely wrecking it that week.

He was always low man on the totem pole. It makes sense he would be the first out. They are not going to cut someone they just drafted, like Akingbesote before training camp but I will be shocked it there aren't more DTs cut before the roster is finalized.

From seeing some of Winfreys better plays with the browns if he can be consistent than he could possibly make the 53 here. Outside of OSA there isn't much talent at DT here so it shouldn't be too terribly hard to crack the roster.

My point is Jerry fills the team with JAGs in FA and Scouring UFL and ignores FAs that can make a difference like a plague. The Cowboys nation celebrates when we sign anything that has semblance of talent. And every few years maybe twice a decade when the team is really sucking it he makes a splash move like Cooper or pickens...

Thisnis not how you build and win a championship.

And I will hold out judgements on schotty. Everyone is just hopeful at this time. Let's not forget schotty was on the staff last year.
He was. But had no real influence. Last year is fully in Jerry et Al and McCarthy.

He was also on staff n 2023 when Dak was second in MVP voting out offense put up near 30 points a game.

How this team deals with FA at this point isn't really a discussion. No matter what we want they are going to do what they feel is best.

And, whether or not we sign the best FA to ever play, has no bearing on how fans can feel about another player regardless of how acquired.

This is always the argument that I struggle to accept.

2024 was a disaster, but Schottenheimer gets a pass because it was McCarthys failed scheme.
2023 apparently that wasn't the case though, and Schottenheimer gets credit for because Dak had such a good year?

I'm fine with either argument, but not both. Personally I think Schottenheimer had a massive influence on the offense both years, but I can understand arguments to the contrary. What I don't get is playing both sides of that.

These are just simply camp bodies anybody counting on them or making claims on positive or negatively it doesn't matter they're just going to compete see if they make the team.....

I mean they're real short on corners so this is not a surprise they're not looking for starters they're looking for role players depth so they can contribute on special teams and then come in occasionally on what nickel dime maybe if there's a run of injuries they come in and have to do what like Booth did last year it wasn't very good but sometimes you just need bodies and hold on long enough for your starters to get back...

I'm a little surprised they haven't brought in Gilmore or a veteran corner that actually has a chance to be able to hold down a starting spot shortly...

Maybe he isn't very good at ping pong?

Obviously this wasn't an OTA or mini-camp driven decision. I'm more surprised a team that is so lacking for a quality NT cut one for another 3T who likely won't make the 53. I'd say the team came into this offseason knowing they weren't keeping Rogers and were just waiting until they needed that roster spot. I don't think the NT room will be static between now and August and expect more "churning"

His skill set fits the scheme. I really liked him in the draft. And I truly think he's going to surprise some. He only played his rookie year, I believe. And we're now two years past his rookie year.

He's also been playing in the UFL.

The other thing is, he had a 2nd round grade by many. It has been the off the field stuff mostly that impacted his development trajectory.

I mean, he did play for Oklahoma. Pretty good against Texas.

But this isn't an UDFA like my pet cats Holden and Cropper.

We've seen him one year, playing for the Browns, where you can see some of his ability. He at least flashes there.

It's just. He's a bonehead. But listening to his UFL interview, maybe he's grown up some.

If anything, he's an unknown with well-documented potential.

This is how they should have acquired Jonathan Mingo.

Go ahead. Write him off after a year in the league.
Thanks for the opinion. Right, wrong, doesn't matter. Still 411

The thing I will concede to you is that the guy absolutely has plus lateral movement for an interior player. He also looks like a darn bull coming off the ball sometimes. It makes it easy to fall in love with the guys natural abilities for sure.

Now to be fair this is his rookie year in 2022, but In watching his NFL film I'm seeing too many major issues with some but not enough flash to make up for the negative plays. He seems to be on the ground quite often, plays straight up and down with high pad level, only plays the man in front of him (horrible on double teams), has shown almost zero ability to read blocks, and has no feel for rushing the passer. On his pass rushes hes essentially a guy with just a bull rush that keeps resetting his hands and shuffles his feet side to side. That typically tells me a players brain is not processing whats going on in front of him quick enough. Instead he just plays everything off the bull rush and shoots gaps. That can have value, but when its the only tool in the bag it gets defenses in trouble as well as offenses will use that aggressiveness against him.

I'll for sure give the guy a fair chance to be evaluated this camp, but for the reasons listed I also think hes a JAG until shown otherwise. His film reminded me a little bit of Mazi Smiths rookie year. You see enough natural athletic ability to want to stay stubborn on the guy, but its hard to be confident that the production will ever be consistent enough to match the measurables.
Pretty much right on. He's not perfect. Has some of the same balance issues Mazi has. Even though they are different positions, they have similar pros and cons.

I think he ends up being a rotational piece more than likely, maybe PS.

His history with Whitecotton helps.

This team is so screwed at DT it’s ridiculous.

I realize they think they’ve fixed it with overpaying one guy and using a first on another, but the depth is atrocious.

They need to make a trade for one of reasonable significance AND also add the veteran off the couch in August (the next Hankins). .

They continue to bet on way too many things going right.

even compared to the rest of NFCE teams we are way way behind.

Says you before you sing see a single snap from any of these teams you think we're behind yeah I don't think so you can call it that if you will but I remember before the injury riddled year we had last year which by the way Washington struggled to beat us we nearly swept them they're back up quarterback had to come in and save the day against our backups our practice squad you think we're that way behind and they barely beat our practice squad we had a record amount of injuries last year that's why we didn't compete...

Before that three years in a row 12 wins three playoff appearances and we beat the Eagles twice over that. Literally the Cowboys played the NFC East Great the record is great head to head prescott's record is great against him and somehow you think we're really far behind because you read stuff because you think what rosters they have names on the back of their jerseys that seem better than ours how about this how about you just take a seat stay in your lane and let's just watch the games and then we can comment after 17 games how far behind we are because last I checked the three years we were healthy and had our quarterback standing we were dominating just about every team in the east we have the same core players from that run we may even have a better coaching staff i'm not guaranteeing anything but saying we're behind everyone!!

oh my God can you guys be anymore dramatic... Two other drama queens you read the headlines there are no paper champions you play a head to head and see how the season goes lots of things can change week to week that's what sports are about that's why it's fun...

Yes. We have 90 roster spots at this point. It would be stupid to search for a guy like Winfrey who played really well last year in the UFL.

That roster spot needs to go to an extra punter or kicker to provide competition!!!

I cannot believe this board that I have been with for so long is now overrun by idiots making stupid posts.
At first, your sarcasm was over my head.

Apologies.

Seriously? I didn’t write it but I put a like on the response about the rest of the division.

What do you mean “not seeing a single snap?”

I’ve seen enough snaps to know that the Osa/Mazi combo isn’t good enough. You want to believe that Mazi isn’t a bust or that 7th round draft picks can be immediate impact rotational players, that’s fine, but don’t go name calling for people that are skeptical.

And for the record Philly has probably the best combo in the league, Washington has Payne and Kinlaw, and NY has Lawrence.

That alone puts Dallas behind them all.

Bro...Its literally a thread about DTs. No one is talking about Prescott or 12 and 5 seasons. What people are saying is that we are behind the rest of the division at DT.....Pretty hard to argue that, especially given the Eagles recent dominance at the position.
