I wonder why a draft pick signing is news. I mean, what choice does he have?

Force of habit, I suspect. These signings used to be news when there was actually something to negotiate. The most recent CBA, as others have pointed out, have taken the negotiation out of things by effectively dictating what rookies at each draft position will receive. That obviously makes these signings a non-event, as you suggest.

Still, it's nice to know his names on a contract.

Or Bo Jackson who was drafted, refused to sign with Tampa Bay and was then put back into the "draft pool" the year after and taken by the Raiders in the 7th round.
