Cowboys Sign LB Kyle Knox - Cut S Keeland Johnson

IRVING, Texas – The linebacker shuffling continued at Valley Ranch on Tuesday, as the Cowboys signed free agent Kyle Knox to the roster.

Knox is a three-year veteran who went undrafted out of Fresno State in 2012. He was signed by Seattle as a rookie and spent the year on the practice squad. The Seahawks released him at the start of the 2013 season, and he spent time with Jacksonville before landing in New Orleans.

He played two games with the Saints in 2013 and hung around to make 12 appearances with three tackles last season.

The Cowboys released safety Keelan Johnson to make room for Knox on the 90-man roster.

Keep churning the bottom of the 90-man roster. It looks like they are going to find some LB's that excel on special teams, come hell or high-water.

The Cowboys roster is really going to be upgraded by the time camp kicks off. Love the way they're looking high and low for young, athletic, high-effort guys.

Fits the size and speed requirements for the defensive scheme. Does a nice job of competing each snap. Got a little tired in the Ravens game but was able to fight through it. Good football intelligence. Wasn’t fooled when the ball went away from him on the boots and waggles. Was aware where his man was on the route and was able to secure him with positioning. Good playing speed and quickness. Best trait that he has in my opinion is his ability to burst and close on the play. When he is on the move, he can cover some ground. Plays with lateral quickness and agility. Good body control and balance.

The things that caught my eye in Broaddus' write up are that he has speed, lateral quickness, football intelligence, and a high motor.

If they have that and are young... Dallas will take a look at them, IMO.

This time of year they'll bring in guys just to have the right number of players at each position group to run the drills they want to run for camp. They have been carrying an extra TE in camp the last few years, for example, so that they don't have to overwork Jason Witten with all the formations they want to run. They typically bring in extra WRs, too, so they can run the number of deep routes they want in order to get the defense prepared without fatiguing starters and getting pulled muscles and the like. LB is an intense position in terms of impact, and they run a lot, so it makes sense to go deep there, too. Especially when you add in the ST implications.

They must think Knox has a better shot than Keeland did, and at a minimum will help us through training camp.

The obsession with LBs is interesting. They already have way more LB options than Safety options and they just replaced a Safety with another LB.

Right. And you never know. If the guy has athleticism, cam move well, and has a good work ethic, then there is always a chance the light goes on for him and he surprises.

I mean, it is doubtful that he will end up making the team... but at least there is a shot because he has the traits and youth that Marinelli and Garrett want.

Taking a 'looksee' at a practice squad candidate to groom or a possible STs Ace in the making. You can never have too many LBs, "quoting Bill Parcells".

LB is a high impact position which means more injuries are likely to happen especially over time and the course of an Offseason. Not to mention the grueling 16 game NFL schedule, plus hopefully playoffs with entering the tournament at the end of the year.

Aren't Rolando McClain, Sean Lee, Anthony Hitchens, and Mark Nzeocha either limited or rehabbing injuries?
