Cowboys source, Cowboys close to deal with Osa $21 Million a year

The next Crawford deal.

I fondly remember fans trying to justify that debacle for years.
The Crawford situation was such a screw up on so many levels. It didn't help they bounced him around like a yo-yo between DT and DE, making him gain weight, lose weight, etc. Throw in a bum shoulder and bam, quite the bang up job they did from signing to using him.

If Osa is off the market Milton's price should go up. One thing to consider is Milton got single coverage because he played with Jalen Carter, while, Osa received a lot more attention from OL.

I would really like to see Kenneth Grant next to Osa and see how that works out. Run stopping DTs are still on the grocery list.
Imagine Williams lining up next to Micah. I wanted Dallas to draft him when he came out. They missed him by I think 11 picks, but since he was a rookie he has flashed more ability to me than Osa. Williams would start for Dallas even though he has been a rotational player in Philly.

And yet they - and many fans - will still try to justify it.

It ain’t just a River in Egypt!

This is crazy!

These reported numbers would put Osa in the Myles Garrett range of compensation.

Anyone want to argue that Osa’s production is anywhere near the Myles Garrett range?

Yeah.

Didn’t think so.

I would ask, " would Osa be a starter on the top 10 defenses in the league"?

Crawford was a decent player who never should've played DE. Jerry screwed him over royally, as he's done w/ many players in this clusterfudge.

My fear too. Now, Osa has 2 years being high in pressures. His pass rush win rate is good.

But, it almost feels like giving Almost Anthony Spencer a big deal as well.

Spencer was a good player, well rounded, but just couldn't be that pass rushing threat to give Ware that 2nd threat on the other side.
Even with the cap at ~280mil, it's still a good chunk of "AAV" to invest in a player.
Just hope if they do sign him, this isn't their only improvement at DT.
The visits so far to date show they've have talked to a handful of DT's so far, but they really need to improve the middle and not just be status quo or put all their chips on Mazi figuring it out.

It seems like an overpay for someone who is not yet a all pro or pro bowl level

But as with that very difficult to find and fill 3 tech DT but maybe it's the nature of the market.
The market dollar onna grow and keep going up.

Free agency and salary rate are not gonna stay put status quo.

This is just par for the course. Such a Dallas thing to do.

Is anybody here even surprised anymore?

16th in run D, and that showed up mightily in the playoffs.
That's not on OSA though. If you want to fix the run they need to address the true issues there. OSA was a poor fit for Zimmers scheme, he was actually a pretty average player against the run in 2023 under DQ. I would expect him to be better in an Eberflus system that allows OSA to one gap it more.

That 2023 playoff game here were the runs to start that game off....I only watched the 1st half back:

15:00 - Weak side run off the G, Nice job by OSA to move with the T and seal off the cutback lane (+)
13:57 - Run right as OSA, OSA gets penetration in the B gap forcing a cut back resulting in loss of 3 yards (+)
11:17 - Run right as OSA, assuming a miscommunication on this play? OSA goes left rest of DL slants right leaving a massive gap for 4 yards (-)
10:41 - Run to weak side, OSA almost goes a long way to make the play at the LOS from strong side 3T but goes for a 13 yard run. This was very bad LB play, neutral grade for OSA as he made a strong effort on a tough play but did end up on the ground.
10:02 - Run towards OSA. OSA gets good penetration and forces the cutback, once again looks like a result of bad LB play.
8:49 - Run right up the middle, middle does a nice job stuffing it and forcing the back to cut outside for no gain. (+)
2:18 - Run right at OSA, Nice job taking on the double team and does not let either OL get the 2nd level. (+)
Q2
14:19 - Run up the middle for TD - Middle holds well, Back find a hole weakside B gap to fall for the TD.
6:13 - Run right as OSA, OSA recovers from a double team to make a play for a gain of 1 yard (+)

Looking at the film from this year on OSA I agree he was not a great run player, under DQ he had some struggles but was far from the problem. He works really well in the run game when he can just focus on penetrating a gap and play half a man though. He needs to be more consistent in fighting the double teams and can end up on the ground more than you'd like moving with these zone runs, but overall I don't see OSA as a liability in the run game when watching his film from 2023. He should fit in well with Eberflus and if they actually look to upgrade the DT and LB positions this offseason my concerns about OSAs run game limitations become very small.

That appears to be our excuse every time we grossly overpay someone. Weak excuse.

Myles Garrett signed his extension back in 2020. At the time he took up 12.6% of the cap. If you wanted to do apples to apples comparison that would be $35M in todays dollars. Lets see what the final numbers actually are, but OSA getting $21M isnt even close to the same thing as it would be closer to 7.5% of the cap and puts him in line with an Ed Oliver payday who is 17th overall in DT pay by that measurement.

It's not always on the LB.

Osa is an OK player, no one is saying any different. The problem is, he's not the difference maker that he's getting paid to be. I love him for 12 mil, don't like him for 21 mil. It's more about value for the salary, and it's just not here in this case.
