Cowboys State of the Union Address

Either this is a joke, or you've been brain washed.

Oh good lord, man. You're not the sole person on a Cowboys fan site who wants to see Dallas return to NFL greatness. This... "Judas" act is getting real thick my friend.
I've seen your act, not impressed either.

You are part of the 95% that protect certain players cause you like them, no matter how bad they play.

Judas;2767154 said:
Of course not, you're used to losing. I'm from the Landry days, the Jimmy days, I still can't stand losing and I won't put up with it. You should try it.
I am from the Landry and Jimmy days also.

But I also know that at last seasons end, I was underwhelmed by the NFC teams in the playoffs. None were great by any means. There were only a couple of very good ones.

I believe we can be very good this year. All 3 phases of the team will be improved. That means we could be one of the top 2 or 3 teams in the NFC.

Act? Good thing that I didn't change my username simply because my pet player changed teams.

95%? Where do people get these imaginary percentages?

Talk about one image being worth a 1000 words.

I am not worthy.

I was hoping we could have back to back great drafts. But we did okay given the talent pool and our circumstances. Adding Brooking, Sensabaugh, Kitna, and Igor filled our glaring holels with experienced players. We added some depth, added guys that force turnovers, and improved our special teams. Can't be mad at that.

Explain how. Seems like the Giants have gotten better, the interior of that Commander defensive line will be problematic for not just the Cowboys, but for anyone they play, and the Eagles look like they've improved.

So with that said, where have we improved, except maybe at ILB? Our SS position is still up in the air, Hamlin was average last year, to below average.

I will give you Scandrick, he was pretty good last year, he should improve. I also like Felix, he's the only explosive player on the offense.

Crayton is still slow and can't get opened, Roy is a fraud, Austin is unknown, Hurd is slow, 86 is a wasted pick, Flozell is becoming a statue allowing anyone to run around him, Colombo hates fast guys, Gurode can't concentrate, Barber is solid as long as he doesn't play the entire game.

Witten is great, not explosive but still great, Romo can be great if he comes prepared to play, and a lot of other things I won't go over anymore.

Ware is great, who knows about the new guys we picked up. James is Hot'n'cold. Folk is great, our punter has one good year, then one bad one.

Who knows if our special teams will be any good, trying to hire a kick off specialist is not smart, just learn to cover the kick offs. HOrrible punt returners, including the over rated Newman.

I do like Wade as a person, but I'm underwhelmed with him as the boss, and Garrett sucked completely last year, yet people are happy to see TO gone but not that sorry ******.

We got blasted for a few of our picks last year and I was pretty happy w/ the draft. I don't bash or praise any draft till I see the product on the field. We even got blasted for Folk because he wasn't the highest rated kicker on the board.

Then I'd fire Wade and Garrett the next day. Hire Cowher. Give him whatever he wants. bring in 12 more rookies. I'd blow the roster up. I'm tired of losing!!!!!!

What has Cowher done w/o Dick LeBeau? What have the Steelers done W/O Cowher and still with LeBeau? That team is great because of defense and I doubt Cowher has much to do w/ that.

Yet another positive thread hijacked by negativity. Are you guys even fans? Or is it that you just need to ***** about something? You know who you are.

What if letting TO go really is addition by subtraction?

What if Wade really does come off as a solid HC?

You people have no idea what's going to happen. So why not be supportive?

If a coach makes a bad call or a player costs a game, ***** away for a day or two and MOVE ON. But we haven't even put pads on yet and certain people are gloom and doom already.

Judas - our punter has one great year then a bad one. Since he came to the team he's been a top 5 punter in the league. He got injured last year, i sure as hell hope you're not using that as his BAD year.
He along with Shane Lechler has the best leg in the league.

Worst off season in the history of the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry should be embarrassed coming into this new stadium with this squad.

Hasn't improved the offense, horrible draft, all draft picks wrapped up in a WAY over rated Tight End trying to play wide receiver. Gets rid of a couple of law-breakers, brings one back. Leaves the same sorry coaching staff in place, and meanwhile, he's still the GM.

If you're going to get rid of TO, at least bring in someone to replace him somewhat. No productive moves on draft day, except moving out of the 3rd, basically bringing in lessor talent, picking up a kicker when you have an allstar kicker on the team already.

The only real thing he did was pick up a QB, even though he won't do much either, you'll need to draft a QB higher than that in order to find a franchise QB.

Ive said it once, and Ill say it again. Somewhere out there a village is missing it's idiot. (Bring on the infraction I dont care)

Why dont you just grow up Clueless? People are getting sick of your drivel.

I would suggest everyone put Nimrod, AKA Judas, on ignore.

Perfect name.

first, I have to find that ignore button, oh there it is

*poof*

this franchise is a joke and they are just making BS moves. We're going 5-11 and we're going to be SoL in 2010 we don't have a #2 WR and our draft class in 09 is crap and no1 is going to help where it matters. (Oline dline)

Exactly - how are our o/s moves b/s when we have gone all out to address one of are biggest failings in recent years, namely special teams.

Here's how I see it...

Offense – While having TO didn’t help chemistry, he definitely was a match-up nightmare on the field. Who will post 10 TDs and be the big play threat this year? Witten isn’t that guy, he’s a move the chains 3rd down specialist. Outside of 2006, Roy Williams has been underwhelming. Who is the #2? Patrick Crayton is miscast as that and Miles Austin is unproven and could seriously struggle against a starting corner. Tony Romo (in the past two years, not counting his first) has thrown for 61 TDs. 25 of them were to Owens (41% overall). Furthermore, he’s not going to be drawing double teams anymore and teams can drop a safety into the box.

Secondly, I think Romo can be a great QB, if he has somebody to keep him in check. While he can win games, he will also lose big games against tough opponents because he will take unnecessary risks. Until that guy comes along and tunes it down for Romo (who will very promptly be fired by Jerry anyways), the Boys will struggle to win the big ones (not saying you can’t or can do it, just that they’ll struggle).

However, I see the backup position at QB being considerably better. Not that Kitna is the best backup in the division, but he’s a sight better than Johnson was. He’s not going to light the world on fire if Romo goes out but he shouldn’t lose games single-handedly either.

The decline of Flozell and the lack of any real depth along the offensive line remains troubling. I’m definitely not sold on Kyle Kosier, I don’t think he’s anything but an average starter and I think Gurode may be the most overrated center in existence (which I believe Jerry agrees with me on because of his reported interest in Mack / Unger in the draft).

Something I think you have going for you however is the trio of RBs. While Marion Barber is probably miscast as the lead, he does eat the clock well in the 4th quarter. I’d start Barber for a series or two, then throw in Felix and Tashard then finish off with Barber again. However, I think Felix will turn out a bit like Brian Westbrook (talented but oft injured). The question here is can Garrett (addicted to the explosive nature of the passing game) bring himself to call a run-heavy offense?

Defense – One thing you won’t have to worry about is the pass rush. That’s easily going to be among the best in the league. Ware will post in the upper teens for sacks (or low 20s) and you’ll have a bunch of guys in the mid single digits. However, Wade’s defense is boom or bust and you saw that in the Ravens game. There’s a price for those sacks and that’s the big play.

Bradie James should provide a solid presence in the middle and Keith Brooking is just more of the same right beside him. First it was Akin Ayodele, then Zach Thomas and now Keith Brooking. None of those guys were horrid, but none of them were good either. The thing to keep your eye on is Ellis on the strongside. I think this is a good barometer of where Spencer is at. If Ellis spends considerable amount of time there, I think you have got a problem with Spencer. Common draft methodology declares that you have 3 years to develop before being declared a bust. Spencer still hasn’t displaced Greg Ellis who didn’t have the greatest season last year anyways. The Boys need Spencer to show up because Ellis is getting older and grumpier by the minute. Without a good presence at OLB opposite Ware, Ware will see more offensive attention and that will negate (to a degree) his impact.

On the DL, losing Canty will hurt because I don’t think Olshansky is quite the same player, but I don’t think the difference will be anything to get worried about. What I’d get worried about is the secondary. Terrence Newman wasn’t the same last year and hasn’t been elite for the past couple of years. Pacman actually played the best when he was in. Who is starting opposite of him anyways? Scandrick looked good… at the dime position. Going up against #2 receivers, I wouldn’t hope for much. Mike Jenkins looked just horrible. Maybe this year is the year he picks it up? I don’t know, but that would be concerning. After those three, you have the likes of Alan Ball and Courtney Brown. An injury to Newman (who seems relatively injury prone in the last two years) would be disastrous. I doubt Jenkins or Scandrick have the capability to cover a #1 receiver. Hamlin is solid, but nothing to write home about and Sensabaugh is a huge question mark.

Special Teams – The one thing I really like for the Boys. Folk performs under pressure and that could be a 2-3 game swing. McBriar is an elite punter. Coverage is suspect and so are returns but those can turn on a dime so I’m not going to really comment on those. The new special teams coach is an unknown quantity to me (does anyone else have a real opinion on the guy) so we’ll see how this turns out.

Coaching – Here’s my deal. Getting rid of Pacman, TO and Tank should help (though I haven’t heard anything bad about Tank since he arrived in Dallass) but TO had quite a following and Jerry hasn’t made Wade look like any less a puppet. After TO left Philly, the entire team slumped and the problem wasn’t just magically fixed because you removed TO. A good portion of players sided with TO. However, it’s like quitting drugs. It has to be done and holding it off for fear of withdrawl is stupid. Better do it soon and get it over with then let it linger and fall further victim to it’s effects and make the eventual withdrawl that much worse.

Sources other than TO (according to Mosley’s blog) thought Romo and Witten received different treatment and weren’t held to the fire like others. Will the rank and file suddenly follow Wade when nothing in regards to him seems to have changed? Can he inspire inspired play from his charges or will it be another gee shucks type of showing from him? I don’t have the answers myself, but it’s a definite question mark. I don’t think Brian Stewart was anything more than a scapegoat. The defense was Wade’s and run by Wade. I’ve already expressed my questions about the offensive staff though.

Why are we being cynical? Well the past 3 years we've had high hopes, and this team knows exactly how to build us up - then systematically rip out our hearts in December.

Owens drew a lot of coverage, his production will be difficult to match - but his impact on opposing defenses and what he opened up for the rest of the team probably won't be replaced. Romo will now have the autonomy to distribute the ball wherever he wants, but I hope our receivers can get some separation next year. The guy is always having to force balls in tight spots because our WRs don't run clean routes.

Wade hasn't even won a playoff game, ever. So many different stints, so many different great defenses, and no playoff victories. Can't
be just bad luck IMO.

I'm still supportive, I just won't get my hopes up like I did last year again. Especially after a mediocre at best draft.
