Cowboys Staying Mum On Holder Situation

While the Cowboys moved their practice to the 50-yard indoor bubble at Southlake Carroll High School, it limited the team’s special teams portion of practice.

During the handful of field-goal reps while the media was in attendance, punter Mat McBriar remained the holder for Nick Folk. However, there was another special teams practice – closed to the media – at Valley Ranch before the team bussed over to Southlake.

But talking to Folk in the locker room on Wednesday, he mentioned that he would be receptive to any change that “would help the team.”

The Cowboys have looked at the possibility of other holders for this week’s game, trying out Patrick Crayton, Jon Kitna, Sam Hurd and place-kicker David Buehler to possibly replace McBriar.

And don’t rule out the possibility of Tony Romo returning to his days as the holder. People only remember the botched hold in Seattle, but forget that he was one of the best this team has ever had.

Even Wade Phillips said on Monday that he would “never say never” when asked if Romo come hold for kicks again.

Then again, one of the biggest drawbacks for having your starting quarterback hold is that he’s usually engaged in offensive drills when the kicker can be working on field goals. And that’s the same with any of the other players who might replace McBriar, other than Buehler. So regardless if a change is made or not, McBriar will likely continue to work with Folk during practice, like he did Wednesday.

I'm pretty sure Buehler could hold the ball ...... and kick it, both.

Just eliminate the problem altogether. Let him dropkick the thing through.

I don't want to blame all of this on McBriar but it is strange how a kicker as accurate as Folk has been is having problems this season. We are talking about a kicker who hit 83.9% in his 1st season and 90.9% last season and now is having problems.

I'm sure it's not completely on McBriar. Folk did have hip surgery in the offseason.

True. I also know it does not take much to throw a kicker off. In some ways it is like a golf swing, minor things in the swing can make a vast difference. So the off season surgery may be playing a part.

We should just forgo kicking field goals altogether.

Each field goal you kick brings you one step closer to losing anyways.

Not in games that come down to a FG. I can think of many late season and post season game that came down to 1 kick. Points are points you need as many as you can get.

Chances are that earlier in the game if you had scored a TD instead of settling for a field goal, you wouldn't need that field goal at the end to win it.

Just ask the Commanders... if they had scored TD's instead of field goals against us, they probably would have won the game. There were a couple instances in the Saints game where they settled for field goals instead of going for the TD. Once where they were on or around the 3 yard line.

True but FG also win games and help put games out of reach. Odds of getting the TD sometimes are much longer odds than kicking the FG so you take the points when you can, they all add up in the end.

I agree... i was really only half serious with my original comment.

I would just like to see teams forgo the field goal a bit more when they are the 30 yard line and closer and especially when it's 4th and short when inside the 30.
