Cowboys still evaluting how Clowney would fit in new defense

I have been wondering about that myself.

Clowney had a solid year for the Cowboys last year, but I wonder how well he fits into Parker's system and given his age, whether he's a solution beyond 2026 or simply a placeholder taking plays away from the would-be solution going forward.

I was impressed with his play last year so I wouldn't mind seeing him return on a reasonable deal but I am good if Parker has different ideas.

Hopefully they add something in the draft and free agency. If not, they can't wait until the season is underway to address the position like they did last year. But knowing we have the same FO we can expect the same situation.

Clowney is a hired gun that you only give one year contracts too after you try to get a younger more reliable target. The failure to develop Sam and Kneeland hurt us especially after letting Parsons, Tank, Armstrong, and Gholston over the years.

Panthers released him after one year because i don't think he was a good fit in their scheme which will be similar to Parkers.

Fortunately we have a DC who could probably answer that question. He should be involved in all defensive personnel decisions. Give him the tools and hold him responsible for the results

Leonard Williams had the most sacks on Seahawks and Demarcus Lawrence was right behind him with 6.
I say that to say……defensive linemen these days just seem to have more shelf life than any other position aside from kicker and qb.

Cam Jordan and Danielle Hunter got double digit sacks….Khalil Mack had 17 last year.

If we replaced him with an equal or better player, I'd be fine with us moving on to that. However, I'm not sure I believe if we let Clowney go that we'll get a better option to be part of the rotation at OLB/DE.

Right now, we just have Eze and Houston, so we need at least two more. We have our practice squadders (Land and Odeleye), but if our plan is to re-sign someone like Williams or Fowler because they are a better fit and cheaper than Clowney, I'm not a fan of that.

Clowney is a very good player and right now the best pass rusher we have. Eze still has yet to really do it.

I don't think Clowney is that tough to use.

He's a traditional 4-3 DE. You set him up on the tackle's outside shoulder, or between the tackle and the TE, and then he's fast enough to get around the tackle or strong enough to overpower either. I don't like him as much shaded inside the tackle, but he he has the quickness and power to do it. At this point, he probably doesn't have the pure speed you want in a 3-4 OLB or wide-9 end.

I know we are nominally a 3-4 team now, but I guarn-darn-tee you we will mix in some traditional 4-3 fronts in nickel, and I think Clowney can play the strong-end position when we're in more of a base look.

Actually, the time he was most productive was as an OLB in Houston. He also recorded 9.5 sacks in Baltimore, which I think was a 3–4 as well. I could be wrong.

I just think he fits better in a 4–3. I'm not a big fan of his, though, and I’ll probably get slack for this. I’d like us to get a pass-rushing linebacker like Devin Lloyd or Nick Herbig.

Devin Lloyd will probably cost around $12 to $15 million per year. Getting rid of Logan Wilson and Clowney will net us about $13 million. That can be used to pay for someone like Devin Lloyd or Nick Herbig.
