Cowboys strategy?

Could it be possible that the Cowboys’ strategy (if indeed you want to call it one) is to not do Garrett any favors and hope we don’t get to the playoffs. That way it would be easier to let him go. Maybe Payton and JJ have an agreement in place for him to coach the Cowboys in 2020.

This is a wild theory, but the organization is dysfunctional so who knows?

The organization is dysfunctional, obviously - call it the Jerry factor. But the one area they've got down is roster management. Over the last 10 years, we've had one of the best rosters in the league.

Their strategy is the same as it's been over that span: find value and avoid mistakes, which most of the huge contracts are.

The roster has typically always had some pretty obvious holes that could have been filled with some mid-level FAs that would not have hurt the long term cap.

And they refuse to dive into that talent pool to sign, frankly, what has been a pretty sad list of FAs the last few years. Sometimes their cheapness and inability to use FA wisely has had trickle down negative effects.

For example, coming off a good rookie year at the 3T, the Cowboys had to move Collins to the 1 Tech, where he struggled, because their cheapness at the DT spot but them in the butt.

Their roster management skills are suspect. They draft well but are largely a dud at FA.

They seemed to be ready to give Watkins a very big contract last year. Which is why I don’t understand them being gun shy on ET when we have such a big need at that position.

I'd say that's fair. But that's not the common critique, or it wouldn't be coming day 1. The common critique is that they won't sign Earl or Collins (Vernon, JPP, Jenkins, etc. in years past.)
