This morning I came up with an idea for a new stat, which I'm calling the Stupid Mistake rating. The formula is giveaways x 10 + # of penalties. The Cowboys had 0 turnovers and 4 penalties, so their first week performance was a 4.

(Details here:
http://cowboyszone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=161334)

League best 2008: 12.6
League median 2008: 21.5
Cowboys 2008 (league worst): 28.4
Cowboys 2009: 4.0

So the Cowboys did great on the Stupid Mistake front, scoring well less than the 2008 league best of 12.6 and way the heck below their own average, which was league worst.

We didn't have as many stupid mistakes as we normally do.....that's a good thing.

The whole defense looked like a 60 minute mistake to me. It was putrid.

Sorry if it's confusing. In the original thread I linked to there's a little more detail. Basically, I've created a simple way to calculate stupid mistakes and compare them to the rest of the league. Last year we turned the ball over 2.1 times per game and committed about 7.5 penalties/game.

Add a turnover or two and 4 or 5 more penalties and we might have lost the game.

The offense is still a chinese firedrill before the snap. Sick, sick sick of Romo having to tell these morons where to lineup as the playclock nears 0.

That is very harsh for a homer.

I didn't see the defense that quite . . . putrid.

Good idea. Any significant reason for the X 10, just a number you put on it, or is there any specific reason or factors that shows this works better than a X 5 factor.

Should there be any multipliers in the penalties for penalties if they negate a huge play, like Adam's personal foul should carry more weight than a false start. Or the illegal contact that negated an INT.

Thanks for the input. I think you may be right about 5 v 10. I was just thinking about making the switch to 5 this morning. I think 10 does overweight turnovers; 5 would cover the difference in scale but still add a little emphasis to the giveaways. I'll switch this out, recalculate the 2008 numbers and start using it for Week 2.

There should be those kind of distinctions made but there won't because it's way too much effort to get that info league-wide. I want to be able to compare teams and to calculate it quickly. Think of this as the stupid man's stupid index. ;)

That only happened a couple of times though.
