Cowboys Stupid Mistake Rating, Week 15

At the beginning of the season, I came up with an idea for a new stat, which I'm calling the Stupid Mistake rating. The formula is giveaways x 6 + # of penalties.

This is a short, abridged update. I'm on vacation, missed last week's update, and don't have access to my spreadsheet so I'm going to do a poor man's update, just to catch up a bit. At the end of the season I'll post a full update for the whole league and throw in some extra year-end analysis.

Against SD, for the 2nd week in a row and only the 2nd time this season, we performed well in this rating but lost. We had 6 penalties and 0 giveaways, for a total of six points. And then, against NO, we did the exact same thing -- six penalties and 0 giveaways. These are both exceptionally good scores--the league best San Diego as of Week 13, was 11.08. This brings our overall average down to 14.57, which is above average. Overall, we were dead last in the league in 2008 using this rating so we've gotten quite a bit better.

League best as of Week 13(Chargers): 11.08
League worst as of Week 13 (Carolina): 21
League average as of Week 13: 16.24
Cowboys: 14.57

Marion Barber not taking a handoff, and forcing Romo to run 10 yards downfield should qualify...although we didnt make many mistakes.

Thx for doing this though.

Yeah, although that play didn't hurt us, it's the exact type of thing that should in theory be captured. In practice, it's next to impossible if you want to be able to compare across the league and through time.

Part of me is satisfied with this rating--I think it's good enough for government work, captures something important, and is very easy to keep track of. Another part of me is dissatisfied with its inability to capture enough complexity.

I'll go into a little more detail after the Philadelphia game.

I think it's just a time issue. I mean if you had unlimited time you could incorporate more stats and have a more complex formula.

But for now I think this works just fine.

Dress up the name of your new "stat" and propose it to FOX or CBS or ESPN? Aikman came up with his own stats / ratings

Nice idea.

Personally, I think this stat is very useful and I look forward to it every week. It's definitely on of my favorite threads on a weekly basis.

Dallas has actually been at 5 to 6 penalties over the last 5 to 6 weeks. Which was a vast improvement. When the team was avg was around double digits fans pointed to the coaches, now that total is down should not the coaches be credited for the reduction of penalties?

Nah, we can't credit Wade's staff for anything. He's Wade and it just doesn't work like that.

(But if you ask me, you bet your britches we can.)

That's a very good point. 6 per game is still nothing to write home about but it's a big improvement for the Cowboys.

Sorry I don't expect to see 0 penalties in a game. If you are staying within 5 to 6 in a game that is pretty good.

I also enjoy this weekly thread. It's good to put a stat on what my eyeballs are saying.

Kudos.

Well, of course I don't either. I was thinking that 5.5 or 6 per game would be roughly average. I looked it up: 5.5 per game puts you ahead of about 19 teams while 6 per game would put you below average. I still contend that that is 'nothing to write home about.' But it's fantastic compared to how the Cowboys have done since Wade joined the team.
