Cowboys Stupid Mistake Rating, Week 16

At the beginning of the season, I came up with an idea for a new stat, which I'm calling the Stupid Mistake rating. The formula is giveaways x 6 + # of penalties.

Last week against Washington we had one giveaway and 4 penalties for a rating of 10. This was the Cowboys' 5th week in a row of performing significantly better than average in this rating. The difference between the first ten games and the last five is truly astounding. Let's hope this trend continues this afternoon.

Our overall average dropped once again to 14.13, which is 9th in the league. We were dead last in the league in 2008 using this rating so we've gotten quite a bit better.

Interesting look at performance....mirrors the quality of team for the most part. San Diego seems to be the hottest team in the league and is #1 in the listing.

I would think this ties to Wins and Losses fairly closely as well.

Where are we on the rankings for penalties in the league now? It seemed like we heard every week that we were next to last (Green Bay being last) until lately. It feels like we've cut down on penalties a lot in the past few weeks.

EDIT: NFL.com shows that we have 104 penalties (it's in the offense category, so I'm hoping this is all of our penalties). GB has 114, OAK 112, BAL 110, PHI 109, CIN 107, then us... Yardage-wise, we're 7th most with 812. BAL has 1,057, GB has 1,038, PHI 893, then OAK, CIN, BUF, and us.

Yes, that is the total number of accepted penalties. We have cut down on these quite a bit. For most of the season we were 2nd to last, behind only GB.

I'll have more to say about this next week but in the first 10 games our average on this rating was 17.3 but just 7.8 over the last 5. We've averaged 0.4 giveaways per game during the last five games and 5.4 penalties.
