BTW, the passing game has changed thru the years. It was 77 when the passing game opened up. There were more changes in 78 and in 79 they started the 'in the grasp' rule for QBs.

Great topic, Jobber.

No doubt, Dallas has the best TE history, and most of those guys are among my favorite Cowboys. Got to talk to Ditka, DuPree and Cosbie. I think Cosbie was underrated. He was the complete package whose unfortunate timing got him stuck between the Staubach and Aikman eras.

I always felt the "modern era" began in 1970 or thereabouts, meaning DuPree should have that designation. Doug was a very fine TE who, to this day, kinda gets overlooked. It sucks that Joe Montana was drafted six picks later, but Doug was a nice consolation prize.

I'm a huge fan of Doug Cosbie. Witten reminds me so much of this guy in how all of a sudden you need a play and bam, 1st down!!!:starspin:starspin:starspin

Very good thread, jobberone.

Martellus Bennett has a ways to go before proving that he will turn out to be a great tight end; but wouldn't it blow everyone's mind if we ended up having two hall of fame quality players at the position? Not saying it will happen, but wow! What if???

It's not just TE; we've been spoiled at practically every position over the years, even tough ones like QB. I mean, the Bears and Lions have not had a true franchise QB in well over 40 years--which is why Chicago mortgaged their immediate future for the likes of Cutler.

We have had great players at every position at one time. BUT looking at a continuous process you have to say QB, TE, RB, DL.

He wasn't cut, exactly. Plan B free agency let teams protect 37 players, and the rest became free agents. Novacek was left unprotected by the Cardinals, and we signed him.

And it was by far the best plan B acquisition by any team in the short history of plan B free agency.
