Cowboys tendencies

Thanks for this. Lot of truth in this. Players need to do better but the scheme is the biggest issue in my eyes. Zero creativity.

This is very interesting. I’m almost sure it was in a post last week.

Yes. We don’t use motion, bunch, and tight formations that maximize the advantage these sets can provide geometrically and by manipulating the defense to not be where you want to go.

A really interesting part of this article was the condensed set that McVay uses a lot. Conventional wisdom, especially around here has been go wide and use more WRs to spread the D out.

The article is right that teams have often been leaving plus-one defenders in the box against us on shotgun plays and giving us single coverage outside. The article suggests we run more in that situation, but running at unblocked defenders vs throwing in single coverage definitely favors the latter approach. They say we pass 66% of the time out of shotgun-wide, which if anything already seems kind of low for an obvious passing formation.

It hasn't been working, but the question is how much of that is down to receivers not winning 1 on 1s and how much of it is Dak being unable to exploit favorable situations even when they're handed to him. The coaches are banking on #1 but my TV broadcast eyeball test has said it's more of #2.

Running Zeke up the middle regardless of the defensive formation is gonna quickly drain him. In 2 years he is gonna start to show serious wear and tear.

I reject the premise that there are tendancies. Opposing defenses have no idea whats coming and Garret is always a step ahead of the game. Just when you think he's going left, BOOM he goes right. Its just a joy to watch.

"You think I'm going left, so I bet really that means you think I'm going right, so I'll go left"

All teams, even the best ones, have tendencies. Figuring out those of the Cowboys doesn’t mean the offense needs to be overhauled. There are plenty of tweaks that can be implemented to improve their performance. However, identifying some of their patterns and not using them to their advantage with tendency-breaking plays would be a massive mistake.

Dallas added an explosive playmaker in Amari Cooper, but that shouldn’t stop them from using more play-action passes and motions and condensed formations.

Maybe he is the answer to making defenses pay for loading the box when they’re in spread sets. Or perhaps his addition won’t move the needle much in the next 18 months. Regardless, everyone from the coach to the player has a hand in this team’s current status and a chance to right their future.

Thanks for your post. It touched upon a lot of things...which tend to dictate forcing defenses to respond to a Cowboys' advantage.

It's a process...
Changing tendencies isn't hard. Not complicated. If they are playing man, use 4 wides, needing 4 db's. That leaves no more than 7 in the box. If the safeties play up, throw, if they play back, it's 5 linemen against 6 at most, and I like those odds with our line and Zeke, so run. Seattle did it last week. Their no name rb went off that game for over 100 yards.

But JG is in the middle of his process...
