Cowboys to Green Bay for third consecutive season? The NFL explains

Howard Katz is the NFL's senior vice president of broadcasting and media operations. His real title is ``schedule guru,'' and he shoulders the thankless task of putting the together the regular-season schedule and answering the questions that follow.

On Wednesday, Katz explained why the Cowboys will play at Green Bay for the third consecutive season. Katz' short-hand answer is the trip is the result of a series of unrelated events that determined the arrangement.

In the last two seasons, the Cowboys-Packers were standings-based games.

In 2008, the predetermined format called for the NFC North winner of 2007, which was Green Bay, to be home against the NFC East defending champion, which was the Cowboys.

In 2009, the format called for the third-place teams from the NFC North in 2008 to be home against the third-place team from the NFC East. Again, that matched Green Bay and the Cowboys.

The Cowboys' next trip to Lambeau Field was set by the division rotations. This is an NFC East-NFC North season, and it was set the Cowboys would play at Green Bay and Minnesota. In 2013, when the NFC East-NFC North comes up again, the Packers and Minnesota will play at Cowboys Stadium.

In 2011-12, the NFC East and NFC North will meet in standings-based games. That could produce more Packers-Cowboys games at Green Bay, or at Cowboys Stadium.

All of this is based on the current 16-game schedule continuining. If the NFL moves to an 18-game season, changes will be made. Katz said his department has begun internal discussions on how to handle a longer season.

No kidding. I love Green Bay games, so much history at that stadium. We should always play Green Bay, its a classic matchup. IMO it should have been Dallas and GreenBay with the Thanksgiving games...ah but I digress.

This is what I don't understand. Are you being serious or joking? Because there is no subjectivity in scheduling which teams play each other and where they play. (Edit: At least the way I have always understood it) It is all set up with formulas far in advance, way before the end of the previous season (and probably before that, I don't recall). So complaining about getting an unfair schedule is like complaining about rolling the dice.

I remember in the early 90's Green Bay fans complained of having to go to Dallas year after year, in which they lost every game.

The tables have turned, but at least Dallas has had better luck in outcomes than they did.

Yep, they made sure Green Bay was going to win that game so they would play Favre in the playoffs.

We also have to deal with that turd Ron Winters who doesn't call anything when Romo gets hit helmet to helmet or hit late. I can't stand him.

I forgot about that. I do remember Romo taking a few late shots last year and one to the head that wasn't called. That is wrong, and something should be done about it.
