On the basketball court, Demetrius Harris' senior season wasn't especially impressive. The 6-6, 237-pound forward averaged 9.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game for a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee team that went just 8-24.
But Harris' impressive physical attributes have plenty of teams intrigued about his pro potential. They just so happen to be NFL teams.
According to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, NFL officials have been contacting Harris to gauge his interest in playing football professionally. Harris, who was an all-state football player during his high school days in Arkansas, was supposed to play football at Arkansas State, but didn't qualify academically. Instead, he went the junior college route, playing basketball at a Missouri community college for two years before transferring to UW-Milwaukee.
Despite having been away from football for more than four years, Harris has "more than a dozen" NFL teams evaluating him. According to McGinn, that list includes the Cowboys, who are supposed to meet with Harris on Monday.
Making the leap from college hoops to the NFL is rare, but it's not unprecedented, especially for tight ends. The two most notable examples are San Diego's Antonio Gates and New Orleans' Jimmy Graham, neither of whom played college football.
