Before the f/a period begins next week. More talks expected at the combine with his agent.

Per FWST.

As long as both sides can come to a reasonable agreement I would love to have him back. It's one less concern heading into the draft.

Memo to Jerry: Do not overpay!!!

That's my biggest concern. Canty is not worth what early reports say he is looking for.

That's how I feel. He's a rock against the run and seems like a pretty high character guy. He's a natural 3-4 end. Those are the kinds of guys that are not easy to replace. I would not be surprised to see Ware's play suffer a bit if Canty goes since Ware plays next to/behind him.

Why do folks really care what type of contracts Jerry gives these guys? Stephen Jones has figured out the cap. The 90's are over and it seems the Cowboys have at least learned from those mistakes. DWare will get his contract and remain a Cowboy for years so who cares what type of contract Canty gets. It's not our money. I have no issue in keeping guys who perform on the field get rid of the guys who don't.

Carpenter
Berger
McQuisten
Rogers
Proctor
Burnett
Johnson
Curtis

all those guys can be replaced in the draft. Churn the roster, churn the roster.

Here is the deal IMO.

I think they see what is available in FA at that spot and figure it is about the same level as canty so they might as well try to sign him because he knows the system. If they can not then they can fall back and try and get Igor and have the draft.

I think they would prefer to have a known commodity at the position and at the same time not have to worry about finding and immediate replacement for him in the draft.

This also can help clear up their draft strategy to a point if they get him signed as they will have more flexibility instead of having to worry about drafting straight for need at that position.

So if it works out for them...they get a known commodity that knows the system and that is one less area to worry about in FA and the draft. That does not mean they will not take another in the draft but it gives them more flexibility.

Also considering what they will or will not pay. I think the FA market (including Canty) will dictate that to a degree and I imagine they feel that what they would pay for canty would be about the same as what they might pay for someone like Igor.

Of course all of that is just my opinion.:)

Dare I say BINGO! Today's contracts are are generally more expensive and probably be worst in the near future. Also, you can't build a winner when you let your talented players that you have drafted get away.

Didn't see him do that stuid flex celebration nearly enough to merit a deal worth 50 mil.

What happened to us being interested in Igor?

I think you may be right.

Maybe they reach a similar conclusion regarding Burnett? The Draft appears weak for ILB (well, where we draft at least), and I'm not sure other than re-signing Z Thomas if there are potentially cheaper options than Burnett.

I'd like to see him stay and I am not opposed to it being at a fair market price for his position.

I think either there will be a cap in 2010, or there will be a lockout.

If there's a cap, Jerry Jones is digging himself in a deeper hole every day. It's possible that league revenue will actually go down, and to make matters worse, many owners feel the cap is too high already. Who knows? The salary cap could be lower in the near future than it is now.

The Cowboys are replacing the Commanders as the team with the least salary cap flexibility. All these slightly above-average and old players getting superstar $ is ridiculous.

Care to explain this rationale. Since we went through cap hell in the late 90s, when was the last time we mismanaged the cap?

I know the prevailing theme this off-season is exacerbate the hyperbole but at some point, truth will have to prevail.

Just look at the contracts he's handed out the last few years to a multitude of players who are underperforming their contracts. I doubt any team has such enormous $ committed over the next 2 or 3 years.

The common theme isn't hyperbole on the sad state of this team, but of homers - such as yourself - to pretend that all is well.

I'm worried that this is a situation similar to Flozell's last year.

Wait until the last minute and then blink and overpay a good player and give him great player money because you're afraid of the alternatives.

Key difference being that LT is a must have position while I feel 3-4 DE is not.

I see what you're saying.

In taking a look at the Cowboys' roster, how many starters are making what anyone would call a lower salary?

In my opinion, most NFL teams have a few starters who are playing on their rookie deals and not yet making the big bucks, thereby saving the team some cap space.

I don't see that in Dallas - it seems like everybody is getting paid - or is about to. How long can that continue before you're up against the cap?

Eventually you've got to get some 'bargains' somewhere.
