Actually, the defense wasn't bad initially.
Even so, the point was that Dak didn't have Zeke which is why he didn't do so well. He had Zeke in the Denver game, but Dak nor Zeke did much.
At this point, Dak isn't a quarterback you can win with consistently without surrounding him with talent and then that talent playing as it should.
There's nothing wrong with that, per se. But if he wants to be elite, he's going to have to win when he has to carry the team. The jury is still out whether he can do that.
