It's not a good call. It shouldn't be an automatic penalty at all. Just give a warning and then the next time a penalty. The league has too many damn penalties and rules.

Shouldn't be a warning either. The offense has a clock. If the spike causes them to not get it off in time, then it is a penalty. If the play clock isn't down, there is no delay. It's a stupid penalty I have seen called twice, both Cowboys (TO in 2007 vs Buffalo and now Elliott). I have seen others do it hundreds of other times with no call.
