That's crazy, he did the first time but the last 2 times he has thrown it short. Makes no sense, it's a free play so even if it's picked off or incomplete doesn't matter. I'm with you on this one though, 1-3 of throwing deep when they go offsides is unacceptable. His coach should tell him.
