Always fun watching Dallas beat Pittsburgh.

Note 3 things:

1. The greatness of referee Red Cashion. "FIRST DOOOOWWWNN!!!"

2. Parcells on the pregame. Walsh doing color commentary. A Tom Landry special before the game. Jimmy on the sidelines. Wow.

3. The dismissive nature of the hit on Kelvin Martin at 2:12:10. The game has changed.

Notice the pressure on both quarterbacks? I miss those days. A strong running game can alleviate that. Part of the reason the league has moved more towards passing is partly due to rule changes, but a lot has to do with the salary cap. Teams simply can't field enough impact players on defense to get that kind of pressure consistently. Or else the same rules apply.

I remember Irvin's clinching TD. :muttley:

My uncle the Steelers fan: "Woodson will catch him."

Me: "Can he tackle him?"

I was in college and remember having to work that Thanksgiving holiday until 5 p.m. Raced home and caught the entire fourth quarter with my turkey and cranberry sauce. A bit of a slugfest finally broke open when Irvin housed one against a tough Steeler secondary.

This was probably my favorite time of that nineties renaissance. We knew Dallas was on the come, but we still weren't quite sure of the ceiling. Washington was the 400 lb. gorilla in '91, but we were clearly nipping at their heels. It was very exciting! Also, this game was four days after Aikman went down at RFK. The second half of that Commander game marked the beginning of a four-and-a-half game stretch quarterbacked by Beuerlein.

Before Dallas finished the upset in Washington (WAS 11-0 going in; DAL 6-5), we faced the a fairly daunting road with our backup QB. The Steelers game was week two of what I felt was an improbable 5-0 run. But kids grew up quick. That defense started making plays. An offensive line emerged into a monster unit. Michael blew up. And then there was Emmitt.

We were less than two years removed from 1-15. And I'm witnessing something I haven't known since grade school: The Cowboys were amassing momentum heading into December. Was it real? This Thanksgiving game was when I finally felt I could start dreaming. Didn't care that I missed the first three quarters. Didn't mind that I was dog tired from being on my feet since 4 a.m. I just knew my team just ran it to 8-5 and all things were now possible.

That was a fun season. Winning a playoff game in Chicago was awesome, too, even though the dud in Detroit the next week was a sour ending.

But man, did that set the stage or what?

As a 29 year-old, I've been dreaming of this feeling my entire life (first real seasons I remember following religiously were the late nineties). There have been a number of times where it felt like we were close to being at the beginning of a contending window (2006-2008 with Romo and then again in 2016 with Dak/Zeke) only to be turned away consistently. The odds say we'll have our day in the sun again at some point but it sure is tough sledding getting anywhere close. Wonder what it'd be like being a Patriots fan with nearly 20 straight years of SB contention annually.

It absolutely did! I mean, Beuerlein is under center and I am thinking, "How are we getting past Washington?" They're absolutely murdering people." Well, Jimmy answered that one for me right quick. Let's bury their defensive front beneath an avalanche of Williams, Step, Tuinei, Newton, and Gesek. Control the clock and move the chains with Emmitt. Oh, and let's also post up Michael against what many believed to be the top cover corner in the business. With that, Dallas controlled the second half, putting the only blemish to that point on the Commanders' ledger.

Then this game on Thanksgiving. The Steelers weren't really a contender, but they still had a very good defense with plenty enough to make life difficult against the youngest team in football coming off a HUGE division win four days earlier. Once again, Jimmy applies this new recipe. The defense keeps us in it, making a couple of big plays before Irvin goes yard, booting Rod Woodson in the process

Next week, in come the Saints - a playoff team. Dome Patrol. No problem. Cowboys put together a workmanlike effort and got out 9-5. So without our leader, we took this season from a very questionable place at 6-5 with a tough December stretch looming to a winner-take-all showdown at the Vet. Okay, why not?

The Eagles without Randall, us without Troy. Both clubs 9-5 going in. A win means an NFC Wildcard berth. We were facing Jeff Kemp, but that was Gang Green over there. I remember watching Philly play on Monday night in Houston a few days earlier. They put the best offense in football in shackles. It was intimidating if not impressive. And then there was the drubbing they laid on Dallas earlier in the season. Aikman took, what, a dozen sacks that day?

A December game at the Vet. Not the prettiest setting for us. But hold that thought. Dallas' defense does it's job. The offense doesn't do anything until late when, again, Irvin seals it. How timely was that? Of course, Kelvin Martin made perhaps his biggest play as a Cowboy - thanks in part to a red-light block laid by Ike Holt. Nearly thirty years later, I still get goosebumps as I relive that Sunday evening.

The Atlanta game in Irving was more of a celebration, at least to me. By this point, we were making plans for January. A month earlier, who would've thunk it? It was really fun watching that bunch grow up. I don't know that I will ever have that much watching NFL football again. And if not, that's quite alright. That's how magical this time was.

Even though the 1991 team ended up bowing out to the Lions, it was one of my favorite teams of that Super Bowl era. They were so young and getting better, they did not even know how good they were becoming.

I also liked the way that Johnson and Co. recognized after the Detroit loss why they lost and went out and did something about it in the following draft and traded for Haley.

Took me back to being 16 again.....Of course it’s trite but holy smokes the NFL was so great back then.....

Yeap I remember this game very clearly. Irvin breaking the Woodson tackle was awesome. Man Buerlein was like having Foles as your backup.
We have nothing behind Dak. If Dak gets hurt we will win 3 games.

I love Jimmy Johnson passion. ****** I miss that guy! You left too soon. Why did you leave after back to back titles? This is like Jordan's first retirement... Why why why?
At least MJ came back?
We would have won back to back titles. If you go watch the Falcons vs Cowboy NFL films tape, Jimmy was recruiting Deion in his pre-agency. This guy was playing chess while the league was playing marbles.
The 90's Cowboys are like Shaq, most dominant team that should have won at least 2 more titles.. minimum

How important was Deion Sanders in this game. Great more than some remember

Agreed - wouldn't be surprised to see them on the NFL Network's "Missing Rings" show.

If the two JJ's could have found a way to work with each other despite the problems, they could have just kept on winning titles.
