Jones said they had planned on drafting a running back last year and were surprised when he was drafted before they could pick.

So they either wanted Gurley or Gordon or either one of them. They had planned on that even when they had Randle and McFadden.

I think that is very interesting given where we are today.

McFadden had a decent year last year, but there is no way the Cowboys are relying on him to be the guy for the future. Him staying healthy last year can't be considered the norm, and honestly he shouldn't be expected to be as good as he was last year this year.

I think it is clear that they will go after Elliott or Henry in the draft after hearing Jones talk about the situation last year.

Here is a report on them wanting one later in the draft...

Ian Rapoport

‎@RapSheet

Was told #Cowboys were more than comfortable taking a RB in the 4th round because of the depth there. Now they take a UF OT in Chaz Green

Yep, they had a few guys targeted in the mid rounds who went off the board before their picks. I suspect that's the strategy again this year.

Maybe I read into it, but when he said it in the interview, it seemed like he was talking about a first rounder.

He suggested that he has more control over addressing the running back situation this year (they can sign anyone in free agency and they have the ability to draft a running back before any come off the board).

He said he feels good about addressing the running back position as opposed to fixing the defense.

Well the good news is that it seems Jerry says a lot of stuff that isn't true and appears to get overruled by his son and the personnel guys.

Jerry also thought Johnny Manziel would have been a steal at 16.

So far this week...
Jerry says they will not draft a QB in the 1st round
Jerry indicates they want a RB in the 1st round

Jerry draft speak in full force already.....

But give me Elliot in the 1st.
I been saying QB, but also RB in the 1st 2 rounds, in either order. But now leaning to Elliot in the 1st and QB in the 2nd or 3rd. Depending if we can also get Braxton Miller or a DT in the 2nd.

I read somewhere it was Gurley. I hope we get Zeke

I don't think I would be upset with Elliott in the first and Lynch in the second even though I badly want to fix this defense.

You could tell the war room did look a little disgruntled when some of the backs they liked went off the board in the early second/third round.

Doubt Lynch makes it to the 2nd, more looking @ Cook as the QB in rd 2. Nip the long term problem in the bud when you can @4 with Goff (unless SD picks him). Wentz will likely go to CLE. If we love Wentz, you have to jump CLE. These trade down scenarios do nothing to prepare us for life without Romo?

It couldn't have been a 1st rounder though. Unless they planned on trading up. Everyone knew Gordon and Gurley would be off the board before we picked. Gurley went a little earlier than I think anyone thought but those were the two best backs in the draft and they were gone before we picked.

If Browns want Wentz they aren't trading down unless you trade the house for Wentz and he's not that good to do what the Rams did for RGIII.

I think Goff is going to go a lot lower than some people think. If the Rams don't pick a QB........Goff might slide into the 20's.

?? I meant jump CLE for Wentz as to #1 spot in TEN. Some QBs do drop, but think it is time to answer to QB position over trading down and hoping our FO knows what to do with picks past the 1st round. Don't get me wrong, a top RB, WR, DL. CB, would be great, etc. but not a game changer if Romo isn't healthy.

Oh well that's even worse than. You don't trade for the 1st overall pick. You do that we will set our team back 2 or 3 years. You would trade possibly two 1st rounders and a 2nd or 3rd round pick for a player who won't even start for us until 3 or 4 years down the road? That would be suicide.
