Cowboys Week 4 rookie report: Jourdan Lewis continues to ball for Dallas

The Cowboys fell to the Los Angeles Rams in disappointing fashion on Sunday afternoon. Dallas fell 35-30 to the hot young team in the NFC, despite leading by as much as 13 points in the first half. The Rams adjusted their game plan to defend the Cowboys’ offense and it worked, as Dallas became stagnant in the third quarter. There were many flaws shown on Sunday, but there were some bright spots, too.

Cooper Rush was again inactive, as the Cowboys continue to roll with Kellen Moore behind Dak. Chidobe Awuzie, still dealing with nagging hamstring injuries, was held out in Sunday’s contest. Other than that, though, all of the rookies saw some action in week four.

It’s time to start Woods.

He will probably have ups and downs but this is his rookie year.

Does not make any sense to keep Heath as a starter.

Lewis and Woods should be the permanent starters next season

Lewis has the passion for the game that Scandrick used to have (when he was working for a contract), but Lewis actually has ball skills as well.

If he can stay healthy, he's going to be a star

I agree. The veterans aren't playing well anyway, and the rookies are. Make the move now and let them gain more experience.

You think Scandrick has lost passion? Seems he just can't stay healthy to me.
I think Scandrick got too involved with the Hollywood life and now he's using football as a means to support his desired lifestyle.
I hope I'm wrong and that he's able to start playing good football again!

Not too many people were enamored with the Taco pick. Then again not too many great choices were left at 4-3 DE when we picked. And frankly I think it would surprise us if he did turn into something down the road as he is one of the few rookies that have not flashed at all.

With that miss, or so it seems at this point...it sure seems we have two Hits so far in the secondary.

Woods and Lewis sure have flashed and I think although they were both getting playing time initially because of injuries, now I think they are earning that playing time due to their play on the field. If we can get something out of Awuzie once he gets healthy it will still be a darn good draft class...especially hitting on three DBs in on draft. At one time we went multiple DBs in a draft and none of them panned out.

Switzer is still a question mark at this point but he is getting playing time.

Jury is still out on Noah Brown. One play does not make nor break a rookie.

But again...if we happen to hit on three DBs in one draft and even if two of them become starters and the other is a nickle back/slot....that is pretty darn good especially when we pretty much cleaned out the DBs from years before.

It sure is, but it will be infuriating if this team missed out on yet another decision at defensive end. Far and away, it has been this team's biggest weakness and biggest failure.

Add to that the only player currently performing at that spot is in a contract year and soon to be a free agent.

Right now, Demarcus Lawrence is a one-man-show. If he can't do it? No one can!

Right defensive end is not only not a strength, it's a liability. Mayowa can't keep contain and Charlton is a whole pile of nothing at all. Pass rush or run defense.

But I'm with you on the rookie defensive backs. I'd start both Lewis and Woods from here on out.

Jordan Lewis is so much like Orlando Scandrick.
Can he play outside CB in a pinch? Yes, especially if everyone else is injured or garbage, but it will occasionally show up as a liability.

They will both be taken advantage of by larger receivers like Fitzgerald and many of the 6'2" and bigger wideouts and TE's.
Scandrick was drafted in round 5 as a slot corner, and he only played outside when Claybourne was injured because he was our best option. Lewis wasn't a high round pick, not because he's not talented or a baller, but because everyone knows he's more a slot guy, but due to injuries and hot garbage, we're playing him everywhere.

Long term, we have to hope Brown and Awuze can play outside or find another CB with decent size. Lewis looks like he's going to be a valuable asset, but in my mind, he's the slot replacement for Scandrick when his contract is done.

Upcoming offseason---draft/FA?
We need a LG (or move Collins back inside and find a RT)
We need another CB.
We need LB help.
We would like a stud DE and a top WR if either is available.

Woods has been playing CB. It's a stretch to suggest he's ready to play safety--as much as I would love to bench Heath.

I disagree. I think Lewis will be a stud on the outside. His long arms make him not as small as you think in coverage and it’s clear he can tackle. He’s an extremely smooth athlete on another level than Scandrick and that’s apparent(to me)when you watch his coverage technique and tackling skill.

I think you’ll continue to be pleasantly surprised by this steal.

He’s 2inches shorter than Pro Bowler(all pro?) Marcus Peters, but has longer arms and larger hands.
